Chapter 8
After that day, I kept hearing about the growing rift between Oliver and Sally.
For instance, Sally could no longer control her emotions and often quarreled with Oliver at the company.
Oliver didn’t indulge her either and completely disregarded her image in public.
With nowhere else to vent, Sally started taking out her anger on the company employees.
But everyone could see her downfall was imminent, so they flat–out ignored her tantrums. No one obeyed her, no matter how much she tried to throw her weight around.
In a fit of rage, she even fired those employees directly.
Among them were long–serving employees who had been with the company since its founding, each holding crucial client resources. She was practically slashing the company’s vital artery with her layoffs.
When Oliver found out about this, he was furious. But Sally threatened him with the baby in her womb, leaving him completely helpless. He was even forced to get a marriage certificate with her.
In the end, he had to visit those fired employees in person to apologize and beg them to return.
However, not only did they refuse to accept his apology, but they didn’t even give him a chance to redeem himself. Oliver ended up embarrassing himself with the constant rejections.

Thanks to their messy drama, the entire company was thrown into chaos. They lost several projects and nearly became the laughingstock of the entire office building.
But I just took all this as entertainment.
At that moment, I was sitting by the window of city hall, waiting for the staff to complete the procedures. The signing and stamping would be done in one go.
But Oliver learned that I was getting married and called me out of nowhere.
On the other end of the line, his tone remained haughty.
“Marie, are you really going to marry Adam?”
I grew impatient. “Since when has this been any of your business?”
Oliver let out a cold snort.
“Think carefully. He took advantage of your vulnerability to get close to you. Maybe he’s just after your money. Who knows how he’ll treat you once you’re married?”
I let out a scornful laugh.
“He’s just after my money? Like you were?”
The line went dead silent.
For a long while, the only sound in my ear was the hissing static through the receiver.
After a lengthy pause, I heard Oliver’s voice again, this time laced with resignation.

I fell silent, my thoughts suddenly drifting back to a time long past.
