Chapter 20 Are You Questioning Me?
By the time they left the police station, it was already getting late.
Lailah looked at Maxwell and said softly, “Mr. Davidson, thank you.”
Maxwell gave a faint smile. “Anton likes you. Just think of it as an employee benefit. Do you want me to suppress those news stories online?”
Lailah’s eyes flickered. “You’re able to suppress the news, Mr. Davidson?”
Maxwell raised an eyebrow. “What, you don’t believe me?”
“You probably already know who I am,” Lailah said. “I’m Zayden’s wife. The Walter family has immense influence in Stomdale. When Zayden wants something done, not many people can stand in his way.”
Maxwell seemed a little surprised. “You think Zayden’s behind this?”
Lailah scoffed. “Who else could it be?”
Maxwell’s gaze shifted slightly.
The relationship between this married couple seemed worse than he had imagined.
He hadn’t even made a move yet, and they were already falling apart?
After a moment of thought, Maxwell said, “If I said I could do it, then I can. You don’t need to think about anything else, Ms. Griffith. Just tell me whether you want my help or not.”
“There’s no need to suppress the news,” Lailah said. “But there’s something else I’d like to ask your help with.”
Maxwell looked intrigued. “Go on.”
Lailah leaned in and whispered a few words in his ear.
Upon hearing that, Maxwell chuckled in a low voice. “Brilliant. That’s way more effective than simply suppressing the news. Don’t worry. I’ll take care of it.”
“Mr. Davidson, thank you. I mean it,” Lailah said sincerely.
Maxwell replied, “If you really want to thank me, then be good to Anton.”
Lailah nodded lightly. “I will.”
Even if Maxwell hadn’t helped her, since she had accepted this job, she would have treated Anton well.
Maxwell checked the time. “I just got off a flight and haven’t eaten yet. If you’re not busy, would you like to have dinner with me?”
Given the favor he’d just done for her, Lailah couldn’t refuse.
“All right. Dinner’s on me.”
Maxwell smiled. “Deal.”

By the time they finished eating, it was already dark outside.
Lailah made an excuse to use the restroom and secretly went to pay the bill.
Just as she was about to return, a blinding flash lit up the area. A swarm of reporters suddenly appeared from nowhere and rushed toward her, surrounding her completely.
“Ms. Griffith, who was that man you had dinner with? Is he the man you’re cheating with?”
“Ms. Griffith, it’s been rumored that you’re involved with Jamir Buckley. Just how many relationships are you juggling at once?”
“Ms. Griffith, people say you rose to your current position by being at mistress. Don’t you know it’s immoral to ruin someone else’s relationship? Do you even know how to spell the word ‘shame“?”
“According to sources, you were taken in for questioning by the police this morning. Are you really the murderer?”
The reporters quickly formed a tight circle around Lailah, giving her no way to escape.
By the time Lailah realized what was happening, it was already too late.
She frowned and said. “I’ll be holding a press conference soon. I’ll address. all your questions then.”
However, the reporters didn’t let her go. Sharp questions kept coming at her, and they even began shoving her around.
Lailah was pushed back and forth by the crowd, her feet getting stepped on several times, and even her shoe was knocked off..
After a whole day of interrogation, she was already exhausted. Now, being swarmed by reporters only made her more irritable and anxious.
She tried to push her way out, but the circle formed by the reporters was like an impenetrable wall.
“Ms. Griffith, please answer my question!”
“Ms. Griffith…”

“Ms. Griffith…”
The reporters were chirping noisily in Lailah’s ears.
Someone lost control and gave Lailah a hard shove, knocking her to the ground.
As Lailah struggled to get up, someone suddenly let out a cry.
“Ah! She hit someone! Mrs. Walter hit someone!”
Someone shouted, and all the flashlights instantly turned toward Lailah, clicking wildly.
The voices in her ears and the unfamiliar faces in front of her felt like masked demons. They were trying to drown and suffocate her.
Suddenly, a low and chilling voice came from outside the crowd.
“Get out of my way.”
Everyone turned around in shock and saw a tall man standing behind them.
Lailah’s eyes widened.
Maxwell…
While everyone was still stunned, the man walked over to Lailah. When he saw her sprained ankle, a dark look flashed through his eyes.
“I’ll take you to the hospital.”
As he spoke, Maxwell helped Lailah to her feet.
When the reporters saw Maxwell, their eyes lit up. They wanted to rush
over.

However, the powerful aura Maxwell gave off kept them from being. They didn’t have the guts to treat him the same way as Lailah.
“Sir, may I ask what your relationship with Ms. Griffith is? Are you aware of her involvement with multiple men?”
Maxwell’s dark eyes turned toward the female reporter, a piercing chill flashing through them.
“Are you questioning me?”
This reporter was the same woman who had just personally attacked Lailah. She had come with a mission: to say whatever was most vicious.
Meeting Maxwell’s gaze, she didn’t dare say another word.
The man’s presence was overwhelming. Just meeting his gaze made her feel like her heart was about to stop.
Maxwell lowered his head, glanced at Lailah’s ankle, and said to her, “Your ankle is sprained. Let me take you to the hospital.”
Without waiting for her response, he lifted her into his arms.
At that moment, another deep and clear voice rang out in the quiet night.
“Oh? It’s quite a scene here.”
The man’s voice was cold.
Everyone turned toward the voice.
Under the clear moonlight, his sharp features were veiled with a layer of frost.
He looked quietly in their direction. His eyes were like black gemstones submerged in icy water, and his slightly curled lips held a trace of
mockery and disdain.
The reporters froze in shock. “Zayden Walter?”
The beautiful woman beside Zayden spoke softly, “All the rumors online are completely baseless. Please stop giving Ms. Griffith a hard time…”
Only then did the crowd notice Tamara beside Zayden.
Tamara was at the center of this whole scandal. The reporters had been trying to interview her for days, but the hospital where she was staying had such tight security that they couldn’t get close.
But before they could even surround her, Zayden’s icy gaze shot over like a blade.
The excitement on the reporters‘ faces froze.
Zayden said coldly, “That’s enough for today, everyone.”
