Chapter 5
When Shawn hurriedly carried Kellie into the hospital, her dress was already drenched in blood.
As he stared at the blood on his hands, an image of tear–filled eyes flashed in his mind, causing an uneasy feeling to grip his chest.
Just then, the operating room door swung open, and the doctor cast a curious glance at Shawn.
“Mr. Silva, there seems to be a mistake. The young woman inside isn’t pregnant at all!”
Shawn stood frozen, disbelief etched on his face.
“How can that be? Kellie had a positive pregnancy test. If she’s not pregnant, why is she bleeding so much?”
The doctor looked increasingly puzzled
“The bleeding is a result of accidentally ingesting toxins from a marine creature. We need to conduct further tests to determine the exact toxin, but she is definitely not pregnant.”
A wave of alarm washed over Shawn.
However, his initial thought wasn’t about Kellie’s health. Instead, he recalled how recently, under the guise of her pregnancy, Kellie had repeatedly cut his flesh and drained his blood.
Each time, he had agreed without hesitation.

However, Shawn was stunned to realize Kellie had been deceiving him all along.
He frowned and turned to leave, but the doctor stepped in his way.
“Mr. Silva, you need to be examined as well. Your genetic condition requires regular monitoring.”
“What genetic condition?”
Shawn froze, his face full of confusion.
“I’m perfectly healthy. I’ve never been sick-”
He was cut off by a sudden, intense pain in his chest as if something was writhing through his veins and tearing at his insides.
Shawn staggered, clutching the wall for support as cold sweat formed on his forehead.
“Mr. Silva, please get tested. Your symptoms match your father’s exactly!”
Those words made Shawn’s pupils constrict dramatically.
“My father died from a heart attack, didn’t he?”
As Shawn noticed the doctor’s evasive eyes, a sense of dread gripped him. He shoved past the doctor and rushed out of the hospital.
The Silva’s manor was eerily quiet.
Bursting into the basement, Shawn found the aquarium empty, its glass shattered, and no sign of me.
“Where is she? Where is Melanie?” he bellowed, seizing the bodyguard by the collar.

“Madam Silva released Melanie,” the guard stuttered. “She said… the mermaid has already paid her debt and begged you to spare her life.”
Upon hearing this, Shawn let out a bitter laugh.
“She took my daughter and cursed me with this strange genetic disease. How could I ever let her go? Find her! I want Melanie back here immediately!”
At that moment, Maria suddenly appeared.
Shawn, stop searching.”
She seemed much older, her face pale, and holding a document tightly.
Shawn hurried to her side.
“Mom, Melanie poisoned Kellie! And she’s taken Sophie!”
Maria looked at him in shock, then broke down in tears.
“Are you even Sophie’s father? Sophie is already gone. You’re the one responsible! How long will you keep lying to yourself?”
Shawn was momentarily stunned but soon regained his composure, smirking slightly.
“Mom, Melanie has tricked you too, hasn’t she? Sophie’s part mermaid- she has incredible regenerative powers and can’t die! I only took a few of her scales. It wasn’t serious.
“Regardless, Sophie is my daughter. Despite my feelings toward Melanie, I wouldn’t want Sophie dead. Mom, tell me where Melanie went–I need to find her!”
Maria, overwhelmed with emotion, started to cry when he continued to

deny the reality.
“Merfolk possess regenerative abilities, but a half–merfolk child can only develop gills if they touch the ocean! Sophie couldn’t breathe underwater -she was drowned alive!”
She handed him the surveillance footage.
As Shawn watched Sophie transform into foam on the screen, eventually turning into a pearl, he staggered back in disbelief.
J’How can this be? This pearl is…”
Maria sighed, explaining, “When a mermaid dies, it becomes a pearl. I’ve already released Melanie. If she returns Sophie’s pearl to the sea, there’s a chance Sophie might be revived.”
For a moment, Shawn was completely stunned, his hands beginning to shake uncontrollably.
Sensing something was amiss, Maria asked with curiosity.
Shawn, in a daze, finally spoke.
“Kellie said her stomach hurt and needed a mermaid’s pearl as a remedy, so I took this pearl…”
Maria was shocked, collapsing to the floor as if struck by lightning.
“It’s over, everything is over!” she cried.
“Your father and I finally found a cure for your genetic disease, and now you’ve ruined it–the Silva family will be doomed!”
It was the second time Shawn had heard the term “genetic disease.”
Chapter 5
After persistent questioning, Maria eventually wiped her tears and revealed the truth.
“The entire Silva bloodline has this disease. Your father died from it, and so would you have. Melanie saved you with her blood out of gratitude, and she agreed to have Sophie completely change the Silva genes.”
At this point, Maria choked up.
“But you’ve destroyed it all!”
