Leo glared at the two of them. “This is a family matter. It’s not appropriate for the White family to be here.”
Sadie was never afraid of him. “Shut your mouth! If Spencer Whitehall can be here, why can’t we?”
Spencer is engaged to my sister. He’s practically family!”
“Well, we’re Lila’s family! And we don’t trust you not to bully her!”
My father rubbed his temples. “Enough! Both of you, sit down. Haven’t you caused enough of a scene?”
That morning, when Sadie said she was coming with me, her brother had offered to drive us. Then he follo- wed us right up to the conference room. Turns out, powerful CEOs can be pretty nosy.
The room was deathly quiet. Every face was grim, except for Jenna’s. She was practically glowing with triu- mph. After today, she would finally reclaim everything that was rightfully hers.
The director pulled the DNA report from the manila envelope and prepared to speak.
I stood up, cutting him off.
I never let an injustice slide without getting my due.
“Before you announce the results, I want to make one thing clear. If I’m not a Clark, I’ll leave without a fuss.
But if I am, I want controlling interest in the Clark Corporation.”
Leo stared at me, a smug, confident smirk on his face. “If you’re my sister, I’ll not only give you the entire
company, I’ll be your personal driver for life!”
I was satisfied. “Good. It’s a deal.”
Leo’s smirk turned into a sneer. “And if you’re not? You’ll work as a servant in our house. You’ll serve Jenna,
and you’ll serve our family as penance for your crime.”
I never knew he hated me this much. Just because his real sister was someone else?
Just then, Jenna’s mother, who had been silent, spoke up. “I’m sorry! I admit it, I switched the babies! I just
didn’t want my daughter to suffer… I was blinded by a moment of weakness.”
She looked at me, her eyes pleading. “Lila, you’re innocent. Don’t make this bet. I’ll take whatever punishme-
nt I deserve. Don’t take it out on my daughter.”
“You were supposed to have a bright future! You shouldn’t have to pay for my mistake.”
Chapter 2
Jenna crossed her arms, the picture of a victor. “Oh, so now you care about your daughter?”
