“Switching babies is a crime! You should be locked up!”
“You deserve everything that’s coming to you!”
The director cleared his throat, gesturing for everyone to sit down. “I will now announce the results of the
DNA analysis.”
“First, let me state that this entire process was supervised by the police and is legally binding. Representati-
ves from the notary public are also here to attest to its validity.”
The director pulled the papers from the folder.
The results showed: “Lila Clark shares a 99.999999% paternal match with Leo Clark, Sr.”
“Jenna Miller has no biological relationship with Mr. Clark.”
“Jenna Miller shares a 99.99999% maternal match with Maria Miller.”
A collective sigh of relief filled the room. My parents hugged each other, crying with joy.
Only Jenna stood frozen in disbelief. “Impossible! I was switched! How could I not be a Clark?”
“Lila! You must have done something! You tampered with the results!”
I leaned back in my chair, a slight smile on my face. “As the director said, this report is legally binding. It’s not something I can change. If you don’t believe it, you can pay to have another test done with your mother.”
Leo stared at the report in the director’s hands, his face a mask of confusion. “How? I clearly remember seeing a red birthmark on my baby sister’s hand! You don’t have one!”
“The baby you saw,” I said calmly, “was indeed Jenna.”
All eyes turned to me.
I clapped my hands, and two women walked in through the main door.
It was the nurses from the day I was born. It had taken me a lot of effort to find them. Eighteen years hadn’t
changed them much.
I gestured towards them. “These were the nurses on duty in our maternity ward the day we were born.”
The young nurse was now a head nurse herself, and the former head nurse had been promoted to vice–direc-
tor of the hospital.
They both spoke. “It’s true, the two babies were switched that day. But Miss Clark was crying nonstop. We

remember it vividly.”
“We carefully cross–referenced the birth weights of all the female infants born that day and discovered that two babies had been placed in the wrong bassinets.”
“To prevent any mistakes, we switched them back immediately on that very same day.”
Spencer Whitehall’s jaw dropped. He collapsed back into his chair.
