“Didn’t you love her more than anything?”
His smile was painful, full of self–mockery:
“How could that be love? I was just too young and too stupid.]
“Ruby.”
He let out a long sigh:[]
“Now I get why you were so focused on studying back then.
“You used to tell me to do the right thing at the right age.]
“I wasn’t ready to listen back then.[]
“But now when I try to go back to how I was in high school, it’s impossible.]
“Even though I want so badly to win you back.“[]
“What fucking did you say, Jonas!“[]
A sudden angry voice made me jump.
I quickly stepped back as Rachel rushed up and grabbed him by the throat:
“I knew it! You only went back to school for her![]
“You want to ditch me and the baby? Not gonna happen!”
Jonas frowned:
“What are you talking about? What baby?“]
“What, you gonna pretend none of this happened?“[]
Rachel clutched her belly:[]
“This is your kid!”
“Bullshit!”
Jonas slamined his hand on the table:
“I alreday know you’ve been whoring around with half the town!“]
“Oh, so now you’re trying to back out, huh?“[]
Rachel grabbed a fruit knife and held it to her own throat:
“Fine! Kill me right now and you two can be together! Come on!”
I backed away several steps again.
Richard had already heard the commotion and rushed over.
Jonas looked at me frantically:
“Ruby! Don’t believe her! She’s always lying- she spiked my drink, that’s how she…
“But this baby can’t be mine! I only love you!”
Richard pulled me behind him:
“Mr. Parker, maybe save those words for when her fiancé isn’t standing right here.“]]
“Fiancé?”
Jonas couldn’t believe it.[]
I nodded:
“Yeah, my partner might be little annoying sometimes, but I did agree to marry him.“[]
Richard immediately lit up with a triumphant smile.
But Jonas’s eyes turned red:[]
“Ruby, we’re the ones who were married! Don’t you remember? We used to…“]]
“You really think you have the right to bring up the past?”
That one sentence shut him up completely.[]
Jonas’s eyes were red as he nodded, his smile particularly bitter:[]
“Yeah, I forgot – all of this is because of me…“[]
“Jonas!”
Rachel grabbed his collar, relentless:
“You better fix this shit today! Otherwise I’ll…“[]
The fruit knife suddenly plunged into Rachel’s abdomen.]
She stared at her stomach in shock, backing away in disbelief:[]
“You… you actually dared to…“]]
Jonas watched silently as she collapsed to the ground, then turned to look at me with red eyes, giving a tragic smile:
“I’m sorry, Ruby. What’s the point of living again if I still can’t fix what I did? I just… can’t keep going.”
“I’ll probably get the death penalty…
“Ruby, I hope in the next life, I can go back to when you still belonged to me.
“I swear, I’ll spend my entire life making it up to you…“[]
When the police took him away, Richard kept me firmly protected behind him.[]
I only caught a glimpse of him through the crowd.]
His gaze cut through everyone, lingering on me with reluctance.
Like he had endless regrets he couldn’t express, only tears to show them.]
“So when you said you traveled through time before, you weren’t kidding?“[]
Richard said jokingly as we sat in the car.
I kept my head down, still studying my research materials:]
“Yeah, maybe we won’t even meet in the next life.”
The hand holding my pen was gently taken in his.
He leaned closer, his voice soft:
