Chapter 5
As soon as Jack turned the corner, he regretted it.
He glanced back at Selly lying on the ground, unable to stay cold–hearted
“Get a few people to take her to the hospital.”
After hanging up, Jack took Tina to a luxury store to cheer her up.
Tina had been shaken these past few days.
A few years ago, to protect Tina, he’d picked Selly as a shield and spent a lot of time bringing her to public events, letting everyone know he had a weakness.
It worked.
Before that, a few troublemakers would target Tina.
But after that, whenever his enemies wanted revenge, Selly was the first person they thought of
So even when she cruelly leaked Tina’s location, he never really wanted her dead.
At worst, he’d divorce her and send her abroad, so she wouldn’t appear in Tina’s life again.
Half an hour later, Tina finally smiled through her tears and went to try on new clothes.
He sighed in relief, then stepped out to make a call, only to find his men playing games.
“Didn’t I tell you to take Selly to the hospital? What are you doing here?!”
They quickly hid their phones, exchanging uneasy looks.
“Jack, it’s only been half an hour. No rush.
“Didn’t we always wait two hours before going?”
Jack’s eyes widened. He suddenly remembered the black cars he saw driving in when he left, full of enemies he recognized!
“Who said two hours? Go now!
“If anything happens to Selly, none of you will live!”
They rushed out immediately.
Jack was still worried, so he got out his phone to call Selly but then saw a picture the nanny had sent ten minutes earlier.
“Mr. Caldor, we found this while unpacking things from the old villa.”
He opened it absentmindedly and then froze.
It was an ultrasound report from eight weeks into a pregnancy.
The name on it was Selly Tallis.
But he had no idea Selly had ever been pregnant.
In disbelief, he zoomed in on the date, which was from last winter.
Back then, he had just taken over a few new crews. The former boss wasn’t happy and kidnapped Selly to threaten him.
As usual, he went to rescue her, but just a few minutes in, Tina called him crying, saying that she’d hurt her wrist.
Tina was an art student. Her wrist was everything.
So he rushed over to check on her and told his men to rescue Selly.
But what happened after that day?
Jack frowned, trying to recall. He remembered taking Tina to the hospital. Doctors ran tests all day before saying it was a false alarm. Her wrist was
fine.
His men had texted too, saying Selly was safe and back at the villa
But those guys just now said they hadn’t gone until two hours later.
Gritting his teeth, he called to confront them. After some hesitation, one of them finally admitted, “Jack, we were late. Selly got stabbed a few times in the stomach.
“But she always got hurt one way or another. This wasn’t a big deal. We stopped the bleeding and took her back.”
“Stabbed in the stomach, so that’s when the baby…” Jack thought.
It hit him like a blow to the back of the head. Everything from that time came rushing back.
He’d thought Selly was pretending to be weak and had been annoyed with her.
Tina happened to be on her period and asked Selly to stay with her, but Selly didn’t want to go.
In a moment of anger, he’d kicked her…
Right in the stomach.
“L… I killed my own child…”
Jack felt a sudden, sharp pain in his chest. He turned to leave, but Tina walked out of the shop, frowning.
“Jack, I suddenly feel dizzy.”
He quickly pocketed his phone and took her to the hospital.
Two hours later, the doctor confirmed it was just a cold.
Tina tugged his sleeve apologetically. “Jack, I’m sorry for making you worry.”
“Don’t be sorry. It’s great that you’re okay.”
Jack picked up her medicine and carried her in his arms back to the newly bought villa.
Once he finally got Tina to sleep, he called Selly, but the number was no longer in service.
“She must be mad at me,” he muttered to himself and then dialed one of
his men.
The moment the call connected, he grabbed his coat and bolted out the door. “Is she hurt? Which hospital? I’m on my way!”
His
guy
sounded confused. “Jack, who are you talking about?”
“Who else? Selly!”
“Wait… Selly? Who’s that?”
