Chapter 2
In my fury, I finally lost it.
Jason’s face flashed from shock to guilt in an instant.
“How was I supposed to know you’d be back home? You know, I couldn’t ditch this event, so I had to send Amber to catch the dress. Why are you turning this into World War III?”
Jason’s face hardened with disappointment.
“When did you become this jealous person who makes mountains out of molehills?”
“No man wants someone like you!”
I really thought I was done crying.
I’d held it together at the police station and during our silent drive. I’d even spent that car ride mentally saying goodbye to our relationship.
All I wanted was a clean break.
But his accusations still broke something in me.
Tears spilled down my cheeks against my will.
“You’re right. No man wants someone like me,” I choked out.
“So I don’t need you to want me either!”
I wiped my tears and turned to leave, but Amber grabbed me.
She was sobbing–with tears flowing harder than mine–while “sorry” tumbled repeatedly from her lips.
“Lily, please,” Amber whimpered.
“I didn’t mean for any of this! Don’t be mad at Jason. I’ll quit tomorrow–vanish into thin air! Jason loves you so much. Please don’t make him unhappy, okay?”
I was so sick of Amber’s fake–sweet act.
Watching her sob actually dried my own tears.
I yanked my arm free and spat out:

“Scram!”
Amber tumbled to the ground, looking up
“Lily!” Jason was at her side in an instant.
at me with shocked eyes.
Seeing her palm scraped, he turned on me.
“Have you lost your damn mind? Apologize! Now!”
“In your dreams, Jason.”

“Sign the divorce papers, or see you in court.”
I walked away, ignoring Amber’s sobs and Jason comforting her.
I cabbed straight to my bestie Kate’s.
Kate took one look at my face, wordlessly led me inside, and emerged from the kitchen with an army of beer bottles.
“Enough?”
My eyes immediately welled up.
Kate just opened her arms. “Hug?”
That’s when the dam broke.
I collapsed into her embrace, sobbing uncontrollably.
I fell into her hug as years of bottled pain poured out.
