“Fix your marriage before you tank our investments!”
“Exactly! Amber’s a total downgrade from Ms.Smith. You’d have to be legally blind to pick that side–piece over your wife.”
Couldn’t see much of Amber’s face through the gauze.
But those teary eyes told the whole story.
“Careful now,” I said sweetly.
“Infection’s a bitch with facial lacerations.”
Amber’s eyes widened. She choked back her tears immediately.
I smiled.
Amber shifted to her wounded–dove routine.
“I’ve already quit, Lily.”
“Jason chose you. You’ve won–I’m out of the picture.”
“You can drop the scorched–earth act.”
“Just so you know,” she whispered, playing the martyr,
“I could totally press charges for what you did to my face. But I won’t–for Jason’s sake. Don’t push it.”
“Karma sees everything.”
“Hurt people who love you and life hits back twice as hard.”
She was lecturing ME about karma?
I nearly laughed.
My upbringing kept me quiet, but I watched Jason’s face–all concern for poor wounded Amber before turned to me.
“I’ll be the husband you want. Male assistants only. I’ll cut off anyone you don’t like. Is that what you want?
The sheer audacity.
What made Jason think I was desperate to save our marriage?

“You’re just a narcissistic peacock expecting your wife to worship the ground you walk on while you play around.”
“Go fuck yourself.”
I laughed so hard tears streamed down my face, slid the divorce papers across the table.
“Sign it.”
“Or,” I glanced at the sharks circling in suits.
“I’ll dump these shares at rock–bottom prices.”
“No middle ground?” Jason’s jaw twitched.
I smiled coldly. “Middle ground is only for humans. Sign. Now.”
I stared him down.
“Before I decide to burn everything to the ground.”
And just like that–divorced.
Walking out of that boardroom, I could hear the old vultures tearing into Jason, and Amber’s barely disguised glee as she purred:
“When everyone else jumps ship, I’ll be your ride–or–die, Jason.”

At eighteen, Jason fought his first fight for me.
Some guys spread filth about me after my assault, calling me a “train wreck” and Jason a fool for picking up “used merchandise.”
It hurt me deeply.
But I never let it show.
Jason snapped. He took on seven guys alone and nearly died.
I used my mother’s inheritance to pay his medical bills–to save his life.
I camped outside that trauma room, watching that red emergency light.
Begging whatever god might listen.
