Chapter 10
I didn’t care to see Jason’s face when truth finally hit him.
But Kate lives for the tea.
Kate couldn’t stop laughing:
“That spineless weasel lost his shit! Ran out of his own party like his ass was on fire.”
“Everyone’s saying he’s crushed over his precious side–piece!”
“God. What a total doormat!”
When I didn’t respond, Kate nudged me.

Then…
Her jaw dropped.
Because Jason was standing right there.
Still in his rumpled tux, looking like absolute hell–stubble, bloodshot eyes, tie gone.
“Lily.”
Jason never cries. Ever.
In ten years, I’d seen tears exactly twice–after my kidnapping and at Mom’s funeral.
Strike three now.
He crumbled before my eyes.
“I fucked up.”
“I fucked everything up. All of it. You were right–I was wrong.”
“Amber meant nothing–it was all ego. Just wanted to hurt you back.”
“Kept telling myself you wouldn’t really leave. Even after you sold your shares, I thought you were bluffing.”
“I thought you’d come running back if I pushed hard enough! If I made you jealous enough! If I hurt you enough!”
“But I was the one who chased you first. I was the one who swore forever.”
“Lily…”
Jason–who’d spent his entire life building walls of pride–shattered completely.
Right there in public, he dropped to his knees, sobbing like the abandoned child he once was.
I used to melt whenever Jason hurt.
Even a furrowed brow would send me scrambling to make him feel better, dropping my own needs to comfort him.

But comforting gets exhausting.
Watching him fall apart now, I felt nothing but hollow emptiness.
“Jason.”
I met his desperate gaze with nothing behind my eyes.
“We can’t go back.”
From the moment you chose her.
From your first failure to defend me.
From every time you made me the villain.

From each instance you let her parade around our home like she owned it.
We were already over.
That day, Jason blubbered and begged for hours.
Even Kate–who lives for drama–was rolling her eyes.
When it finally clicked that I wasn’t buying what he was selling…
He left around midnight.
Kate snickered about his newest nickname around the office.
“Apparently they’re calling him “The Waterworks‘ behind his back! His reputation is toast!”
“Liiiily,” she mimicked, “I’m sooooo sorry, Lily!”
Kate’s mockery had become background noise.
I ignored her and pointed to a map with several cities circled.
“Where should we start fresh?”
Her face brightened.
“Sugar mama! You’re finally noticing me! Are you offering to be my sponsor?”
She made me laugh despite everything.
Before leaving town….
One last rumor reached me.
The mighty Jason Miller had cashed out his entire empire, transferred every penny to his ex–wife’s account, then camped outside his ex–secretary’s apartment for two straight weeks.
He finally caught his ex–secretary alone and leaped from the bushes, plunging a knife into her stomach.
“Holy crap!”

Chapter 10
Kate thrust her phone in my face, news alert blaring.
“Turns out your ex is a full–on psycho.”
I stared at my bank account with its new string of zeros, then at the arrest video on Kate’s phone while she continued.
“Thank God we got out when we did. Remember how we went off on him? Slapped him, cursed him out? He probably wanted to murder us too!”
“Dodged a bullet there!”
Kate clutched her chest dramatically.
“Guess karma handled him for us.”
My phone buzzed.
A pre–scheduled text appeared.
From Jason:
“Lily–you saved me that night when I had nothing. You breathed life into me when I was drowning. Everything I built belongs to you. Always did.”
Later, I heard the news.
Jason was gone. Suicide.
They found him peaceful, smiling, like he’d finally found relief.
I just watched the sunlight stream through my new apartment windows, feeling strangely light.
My life, finally, was exactly where it needed to be.
