Chapter 2
Callahan strolled over, hands in pockets. He saw Seraphina Hollis sprawled on the floor, then looked at me, a knowing glint in his eye.
“You push her?”
Seraphina scrambled up. “No! It wasn’t Elara! I slipped!”
She sniffled dramatically. “Callahan… my stomach hurts… is the baby…?”
Callahan tsked, scooping her up. He shot me a cold look. “Follow.”
He carried Seraphina into the main house, cradling her on his lap like fragile porcelain.
The guys exchanged looks and slipped out.
I walked in silently. One guy whistled mockingly as he passed.

Before, they’d never dared disrespect me like that, despite Callahan’s affairs. Smart enough to see Seraphina wasn’t just another canary.
So now, I got the canary treatment too. Open game.
The realization hit me. My numb heart splintered with fresh pain.
He didn’t ask. Just stated flatly. “Apologize, Elara.”
I bit my lip until I tasted blood.
“I didn’t touch her.”
Callahan smirked. To the butler, “Bring the cat.”
My blood froze. “What are you doing?”
His smile was cruel. “Elara. Seraphina’s different. She’s my partner. The Hollis heiress. Carrying my child.”
“I won’t tolerate anyone hurting my child’s mother. Including you.”
“So, you need a lesson. To understand your mistake.”
The butler brought my cat. Before I could move, Callahan hurled her into the bubbling hot pot. A horrific yowl tore through the air.
I lunged. Callahan caught me, shoving my face towards the table.
Forced me to watch my cat of ten years boil alive.
He leaned close, whispering in my ear. “Just the cat this time, Elara. Hurt Seraphina again, and next time… think carefully about your mother’s life.”
Tears I’d held back finally fell. Memories of him defending me against the canaries felt like knives now.
Then, he slid divorce papers across the table. “Sign. My child won’t be a bastard.”
Trembling, I stared at the pot. Mittens. My comfort when Mom and I were thrown out. Gone, like Mom.
This marriage was ash.
I grabbed the pen. Signed my name without hesitation.

Callahan frowned, almost imperceptibly. “Hmph. Since you’re not Mrs. Thorne anymore, move to the servant’s quarters. You’ll earn your mother’s medical bills.”
I managed a twisted smile. Remembering Mom’s last words. “Not necessary.”
Just then, retching sounds came from my room.
My heart plunged. I burst in. My bed covered in vomit. The quilt Mom made me was ruined.
Seraphina stood up, fake remorse plastered on her face. “So sorry, Elara! Couldn’t hold it.”

She pulled a ten–dollar bill from her purse. “This old thing… ten bucks should cover it?”
CRACK!
Red filled my vision. My palm connected hard with her cheek. “Seraphina! You vile bitch!”
Seraphina clutched her face, tears welling as she looked past me. “Callahan! I didn’t mean to! I apologized!”
The next second, fire exploded across my face.
