Chapter 6
His face was thunderous. He sat in the hospital conference room.
The Director fawned, pouring tea. “Mr. Thorne! An honor! What brings you…”
Callahan smashed the cup. “Who authorized moving my mother–in–law?!”
Silence. The Director frowned. “Moving? Sir… your mother–in–law… passed away.”
He hesitated. “Suicide. Your wife witnessed it…”
“She didn’t contest it. We assumed you knew.”
Callahan slammed the table. “WHAT?!”
The Director, wary, called for the security tapes. Callahan watched Elara clutching the broken body, vomiting blood. A ghost whispering to the dead.
He trembled. “Why wasn’t I informed?!”
His secretary stammered, “Sir… you… you were marrying Miss Hollis…”
Callahan slumped into the chair. He fought the tremor in his hands. Refused to think what he’d flushed down the toilet. Lime powder? Or ashes?
He’d killed her cat. Burned her quilt. Cut her hair…
This time… he’d gone too far.
Panic, cold and sharp, seized him. “Found my wife?”
The secretary swallowed. “Sir… nearby cameras… all offline during that time.” Before Callahan exploded, he added, “But the hand… wasn’t hers.”
Callahan’s head snapped up.
The secretary took a breath. “A mile away… in the park… a man was found chained to a tree. Missing a hand.”
“Your friend, Lysander Croft.”
“Dead. Castrated. Eyes wide open.”
A collective gasp filled the room.

Thinking of what Lysander had tried to do to Elara, Callahan’s face darkened. “Three days. Find who did this. Find Elara.”
“Lysander? Dig him up.”
“Feed him to the gators.”
“Film it. I’ll show my wife.”
The butler rushed in. “Sir! The Old Master is here.”
“He demands you see him. Immediately.”
Callahan scowled but stood. Back home, his grandfather, Benedict Thorne, met him at the door.

Chapter 6
A hard slap rocked Callahan.
“Worthless!”
“KNEEL!”
Seraphina Hollis stood behind the old man, smirking.
Callahan glowered. “Grandfather. Why are you back?”
Old Mr. Thorne slammed his cane. “This girl claims she carries a Thorne heir! And you THREW HER OUT?!”
“And where is Elara?!”
