Chapter 7
I woke up in an familiar, plush velvet bed.
Not home. Not hospital.
I sat up abruptly, a tearing pain shooting through my abdomen.
“Don’t move.”
A deep voice came from the corner.
I turned, startled, and saw a tall figure step out.
Liam?
Our fiercest rival.
He’d shifted his company’s focus from NYC to D.C. years ago.
He’d shown… interest. I’d always suspected an angle and shut him down cold.
The day Skylar flaunted her pregnancy, I’d been so angry that I called Liam and agreed to be stepmom to his three–year–old son.
A reckless, spiteful impulse…
If Ethan could be a daddy, so could I be a mommy.
He was the only single father I knew.
Never married.
The child’s mother a mystery.
The perfect, pain–free solution.
Unlike Ethan, who swore he only wanted the child, but a single tear of Skylar could make him loss his mind…
“Remember our agreement?” Liam reminded.
“Uh… yeah.”
–
I never imagined facing him like this shattered and vulnerable.
He offered a small bowl. “Drink it.”
I recoiled instinctively shrank back. His hand closed gently but firmly around my wrist.
“Vivian,” he said with a slight smile, “afraid of me, or the medicine?”
I tried to sit up. “How did I get here?”
Wordlessly, he scooped me up. I gasped, clutching his shirt.
“Doctor’s orders. Bed rest.. I want to show you something.”
He drew back the curtain.

Chapter 7
Below, in the garden, a little boy in a teddy bear suit was chasing butterflies.
Sunlight gilded his curls. When he smiled, he had two little dimples.
My heart clenched.
“Who is that…?”
“My son,” Liam’s voice was hoarse. “Tthree years, four months.”
I stared at the child, an inexplicable pull of familiarity tightening in my chest.
Liam suddenly turned me to face him. “Vivian, don’t you really remember?”
His eyes… Identical to the boy’s below.
A sharp pain shot through my head. Fragmented images flashed before my eyes-
Blinding delivery room lights…
A newborn’s tiny fist grasping…
And… and…
“Ah!” I clutched my head, sweat drenched my back.
Liam immediately laid me down and hit the call button.
Doctors rushed in.
In the last second before I fainted, I saw Liam holding my medical report, his face terrifyingly grim.
He spoke into his phone. “Find out how was Vivian was exposed to musk ketone.”
