Chapter 5
Evelyn wasn’t weaker than me, not by a long shot–but right now, she was crying like her whole world had ended, sprinting toward the balcony like some scene out of a soap opera.
I’d had enough.
I stood up, grabbed her wrist, and slapped her. Twice. Hard.
“Who the hell do you think you are?”
“You crash at my house for two days and suddenly you think you own the place?”
“You wanna play victim? Then tell me–exactly how did I ‘bully‘ you?”
“It’s 2025, not the damn Dark Ages. Stop with the crying–screaming–suicidal act.”
Evelyn turned her back to Vincent, and suddenly–a wicked grin twisted across her face.
She yanked my wrist and dragged me down with her–off the second–floor balcony.
It wasn’t a long fall.
But the moment I hit the ground, the pain knocked me out cold.
When I came to, Vincent was standing over me.
And instead of helping me up…
he stepped over me.
When I woke up again, I was in bed.
Tried to move–but my left arm was wrapped in a thick cast.
I’d broken it,
I dragged myself out of bed and toward the living room.
Before I could even get there, I heard the sound of Evelyn’s voice, all soft and breathy.
“I knew you before anyone else did. So why does someone else get your heart now?”
“Why does the newcomer always win?”
“Everyone in this house sides with her. I only ever had you, Vincent…”
“You left me once already.
How many times are you going to crush me before you’re done?”
Vincent murmured, “Shh, baby… it’s okay,”
pulling her into his arms like she might shatter.
“I’ve got you, Evelyn. I swear.

Chapter 5
You’ll never be alone again. I won’t let anyone touch you–not even her.”
Since that fall off the balcony, it felt like I hadn’t really woken up.
Night after night, I was trapped in the same nightmare.
In it, Vincent and I got married.
But on our wedding day, he never showed up.
And when he finally did, he grabbed me by the throat.
“Evelyn’s gone. Are you happy now?!
You selfish, heartless woman!”
“You have money. You have family. You have everything.
She only ever had me.
Why did you have to destroy her too?!”
On what should’ve been our wedding night, I was so bruised and broken I couldn’t even stand.
I hadn’t done anything.
Why wasn’t I considered a victim too?
Every time I looked at him, that perfect, polished face made my skin crawl.
“What?” he’d sneer.
“Why are you looking at me like that? Isn’t this the life you begged for?”
After that, he used my “illness” as an excuse to transfer everything Hart–owned into the Blackwood name.
To the outside world, we were #Relationship Goals–Hamptons‘ perfect power couple.
But no one knew the hell I was living through.
Every night he pushed me further and further to the edge, and every night, it was always Evelyn’s name he whispered.
Until one day–I found out I was pregnant.
Three months along before I even realized it.
Vincent stared at my changing body, frowning.
“Lila, come on. Be smart. Pregnancy’ll ruin your figure.
You won’t look like her anymore.”
I refused to get an abortion.
I wanted this child. I was ready to fight for it.
But Vincent…
Vincent drugged my food with abortion pills.

That afternoon is burned into my brain forever.
I bled out alone in the bathtub–me and the tiny, unborn baby
I never got to meet.
Vincent Blackwood, I hate you.
