Chapter 8
Ethan stumbled backward like I’d slapped him. His lips trembled as he grabbed my hand.
“Bullshit. You’re in love with me! You can’t just marry someone else!”
“Callum’s threatening you, isn’t he?! He’s always been obsessed with you. Now he’s using the fact he saved your life to force you to marry him, right?!”
“I’ll find that son of a bitch-”
I yanked my hand away, glaring at him with pure disgust.
“You think everyone’s as pathetic as you? Look in the mirror, Ethan. Our seven–year marriage while you had a whole secret family? Two illegitimate kids?”
“You and my mother are perfect for each other.”
I smiled the coldest smile I’d ever felt on my face, and they couldn’t even look me in the eye.
My mother stumbled toward me crying, arms outstretched for a hug.
I stepped back, leaving her frozen in place.
“Don’t talk to me about mother–daughter bonds. When you chose Olivia over me, we stopped being family.”
“I’m only alive through pure luck.”
“You had me electrocuted. You broke my legs. Then the kidnapper stabbed me SIX times. And Olivia orchestrated the entire thing.”
Ethan jumped in frantically.
“I know, we figured it all out! I had Olivia arrested. Noah’s also in foster care now.”
“Please come home. They’ll never bother you again. I promise I’ll-‘
He raised his hand like he was about to swear on a Bible, but when he met my ice–cold stare, the words died in his throat.
“I’m done cleaning up your messes. Seven years of marriage and I lost count of your affairs.”
“Mom kept telling me to be patient. Because I loved you, I suffered through it for seven years.”
“Why the hell should I believe you now?”
It’s funny how seven years of felings can disappear in an instant.
I used to be so obsessed with making it work, convinced that if I just tried harder, Ethan would finally choose me.
But all that endless forgiveness just left me broken and alone.
“Lily…”
The light in Ethan’s eyes died completely. His mouth opened, but for once, Mr. Smooth–Talker had absolutely nothing to say.
“You have one day. Meet me at the courthouse tomorrow at 10 AM. If you don’t show, I’ll take you for everything you’ve got.”
As I walked out of my childhood home, my mother’s desperate sobs echoed behind me, but I didn’t look back once.

Chapter 8
Ethan barely made it to the courthouse, sliding through the door five minutes before our appointment would’ve been canceled.
He couldn’t even look me in the eye, his voice practically a whisper.
“I’ll sign whatever you want, but your mom’s in bad shape. Her heart thing is acting up again.”
“After you left yesterday, she collapsed in the driveway. They’ve had her in the ICU all night… Could you just stop by? Ten minutes, tops?”
I stood there stone–faced, not giving him a damn thing.
Only after the clerk pushed our papers across the counter with a bored “Congratulations, you’re divorced” did I finally look at him.
“Olivia’s her real daughter, remember? Let her play nurse and pick out the casket when the time comes.”
“I’m officially out of the picture.”
I tucked the divorce certificate into my bag and walked toward the door without breaking stride.
Callum was waiting by his car, face lighting up when he spotted me. He waved like an excited kid.
“Lily.”
Ethan gathered his courage and called my name.
I kept walking, never looking back–exactly like they’d done when they left me bleeding on that floor.
Now, my new life was waiting.
And I wasn’t about to waste another second on the old one anymore.
