When we didn’t open the door, Kieran started slapping himself. Again and again.

Kieran was half–kneeling on the ground. Seeing me, he desperately grabbed at my clothes: “Chloe, I knew… you’d give me a chance…”
“Kieran.” I interrupted coldly: “What makes you think I’d ever like such a dirty man?”
The tables had turned.
Before, I was the girl with thick black glasses and braces. Kieran was the untouchable prince everyone chased.
Now, with my makeover and gym work, guys were stopping me on the street asking for my number.
But looking at Kieran now–his awful complexion, the stubble on his chin–how had I ever liked someone like this?
I stepped back in disgust: “You’re revolting. For everything our family did for you, just leave us alone.”
Kieran swayed, his voice shaking: “What do you mean? Chloe, don’t you want me anymore? Mr. Harper, you don’t want me either? Didn’t you say we’d always be family…”
Dad was in the living room. He couldn’t help but sigh heavily: “I did right by your father. You’re an adult now–walk your own path from here on!”
Dad’s attitude was final. He came over, shielded me behind him, and firmly closed the door.
“Go! Don’t come back! Just looking at you… makes me sick!”
Kieran finally understood.
What’s done can’t be undone. What he’d lost would never come back.

I put all my energy into helping my student improve her grades.
Finally, on the last exam, she achieved unexpectedly good results.

Settling everything, we moved to California.
On our first night in our new home, Kieran called frantically:
“Where did you go? They said you sold the house and just left?”

Listening to his hoarse, desperate voice, I remained calm:

The other end went completely silent.
I never expected that throwaway comment to be accurate,
That was the last time I heard anything about Kieran.
I deleted and blocked all of Kieran’s contact information from my parents‘ phones and threw myself into decorating our new home.
