Chapter 18
Edith hobbled slowly over, leaning on her cane. Her wrinkled face was full of displeasure.
“Grandma…” Elaine quickly ran up and gently supported her.
Edith raised her hand and poked Elaine’s head. “You, why are you so hopeless? You’re way too easy to push around.”
Though her words were full of disdain, her love ran deep. She was standing up for Elaine.
“Grandma… I… ” Elaine bit her lip. Her face looked pitiful, but inside she was secretly pleased.
She knew that now Edith was here, even if Mom and Linda told her to move out, as long as Edith didn’t agree, they had no say.
Edith saw that Elaine didn’t even dare to speak, and her heart ached deeply. She turned and blasted Linda.
“Linda, you come back and start by stealing Elaine’s fiancé, and now you’re fighting over the room too? You want to make the Preston family chaotic just for your own happiness, huh?”
“Edith!” Eleanor protectively pulled Linda into her arms. “You’re scolding Linda without even knowing the whole story. Isn’t that too much?”
Edith, still leaning on her cane and supported by Elaine, sat down on the sofa. She glanced at Linda with contempt, then shot a glare at Eleanor.
“What do you mean ‘don’t know the whole story‘?” she snapped. “Isn’t it just that your precious daughter lived in the countryside too long, has no sense of the world, is petty, and is jealous of other people’s things, so now she’s shamelessly begging Elaine to give up her room?”
“What an ungrateful wretch! Do you know how she lived in the countryside? And how she lives in the Preston family now? Yet she still isn’t satisfied and fights with Elaine? Has she no conscience at all?”
Elaine sat beside Edith, lowering her eyes. Because if she looked up, people would see the proud smile on her face.
‘So what if Linda is the biological daughter?‘ She thought. ‘Grandma is on my side. With Grandma around, I’m not afraid of anything!
“What kind of words are those? You’ve gone too far!” Eleanor was so angry at Edith’s words that her chest heaved violently.
How could a senior say such unfair and harsh things to the younger generation? Eleanor was deeply hurt.
“I’m just speaking the truth. How is that going too far?” Edith didn’t see anything wrong with what she said. She glared again at Linda with displeasure.
“Linda, don’t even think about snatching a single thing that belongs to Elaine. The room will never be yours. You better have some self–awareness.”
so angry at Edith’s words she lost all restraint. “Everything here belongs to Linda! She’s my daughter. Everything in the Preston family belongs to her!”
“What do you mean give up“?” Eleanor w
“Mom,” Elaine covered her face with her hand. “You’re right. Everything belongs to Linda. I–I’ll leave the Preston family right now!”
Elaine’s teeth nearly ground to pieces. ‘Everything belongs to Linda? Clearly, everything belongs to me!‘
“Sit down!” Edith yanked Elaine back, and then turned to Eleanor.
“Eleanor, is that how you act as a mother? Twenty years of living together and blood ties mean nothing to you? You say things like this to hurt Elaine–do you even have a heart?”
“That’s not what I meant… ” Eleanor wasn’t trying to exclude Elaine. She just wanted to say that Linda wanting everything in the family was fine.
It was just a room. If Linda’wanted it, Elaine could just give it to her. But both Elaine and Edith misunderstood her.
“Mrs. Preston.” Just then, came Linda’s voice.
