Chapter 25
Joel almost choked on himself.
He knew Elaine wasn’t his sister. They shared no blood ties.
When Linda, this so–called “real sister” first came back, all she ever talked about was Jasper–she didn’t even spare him a glance.
Even back then, it had annoyed him. Now? She was outright being cold and dismissive.
joel was beyond irritated. And if he was irritated, he wasn’t about to let anyone else feel good either.
He stared at Linda, arching a brow. “I heard you’re calling off the engagement with Jasper?”
“Yes.” Linda replied. She tried to shut the door, but Joel blocked it.
Of course, she could’ve easily kicked him flying. But… that wouldn’t go over well with Mom and Dad.
Linda held onto the last of her patience.
“Well, at least you know your limits,” Joel sneered.
“Thanks.” Linda rolled her eyes.
“You’re not good enough for Jasper!” Joel continued.
“So what? What’s it to you?” Linda finally lost it and shoved Joel’s hand away, slamming the door shut with a loud bang.
Joel stood staring at the closed door, fuming and itching to punch something.
He’d only brought up the broken engagement to mock her and get her mad. Why was he the one getting pissed off instead? Where had things gone wrong?
Elaine had been eavesdropping nearby for quite a while. When she saw Linda close the door, she finally walked over.
“Joel,” Elaine’s face was full of gratitude. “Thank you.”
“What are you thanking me for? What’s wrong with you?” Joel was in a foul mood. “Do you go around thanking everyone you see?”
He was already irritated, and here Elaine was walking right into it. Might as well use her as a punching bag.
Elaine was used to his venomous tongue and didn’t take it personally. She smiled and said, “I overheard your conversation with Linda just now. Thank you for siding with me. I’ve always liked Jasper, and you remember that, don’t you?”
She hadn’t expected much-Joel usually ignored her, but when it counted, he took her
side.
So what if Linda was the biological daughter of the Preston family? Thought Elaine. Linda had only been back for a month, but Elaine had lived with the Preston family for a full twenty years.
Her bond with them was far deeper, and Linda wasn’t even close to being a threat!
Now even Joel was clearly on her side. If the r
of the brothers supported her marrying into the Vaughn family, and with Grandma’s backing… She knew Linda could forget about fighting her for Jasper!
“I took your side? When did I take your side? Are you delusional?” Joel looked utterly disgusted.
“Elaine, can you please go look in the mirror when you get a chance? Take a good look at that face of yours–the one you had applied dozens of plastic surgeries just to look like this. Purely on looks alone, are you even a tenth as pretty as Linda?”
Elaine was left speechless, but Joel kept going.
“Linda isn’t good enough for Jasper. But you? You’re even less qualified!” he sneered. “You think the Vaughn family would marry a fake? Are you stupid or just naive?”
“Joel…” Elaine’s eyes welled with tears at his words, and she looked pitifully wronged.
This was her usual tactic. It worked wonders with Edith.
But unfortunately, Joel didn’t even glance her way. He brushed past her without pause and headed downstairs.
He was so annoyed. Saying Linda wasn’t good enough for Jasper–he’d said that just to piss off that brat.
Chapter 25
His sister, Joel’s sister–who could possibly be “not good enough“?
But this fake, Elaine, didn’t even have the tiniest bit of self–awareness. She deserved the scolding.
Elaine turned to look at his tall, straight back, her fingers curled into fists, eyes flashed coldly.
A fake? Not good enough? She mumbled to herself. What if the “real” daughterv who would the Vaughn family choose to marry–the fake or the real one?
There was no way she’d let Linda hand over Jasper without a fight!
