Chapter 19
Harrison stared blankly at the diagnosis report in his hand, his fingers trembling as tears welled in
his eyes.
Terminal cancer.
The timing was almost cruel–just when he’d finally found Olivia again.
Now this.
He lay still on the hospital bed, drowning a helplessness that no amount of power or money could fix. For the first time in his life, the billionaire heir of Rivermont couldn’t buy his way out.
The odds of surviving surgery were under fifty percent. Even if a donor liver appeared in time, his deteriorating body might not make is off the table.
But surrender? Not yet.
Not after clawing his way back to Olivia.
He wanted to make things right.
He wanted her forgiveness.
He wanted… to go back. To the days before everything fell apart.
“Why?” he whispered hoarsely, as if asking the void. “Why is this happening to me?”
“Because you’re scum,” came a voice from the doorway.
Harrison’s head jerked toward the sound.
There she was–Olivia.
Standing in the open doorway, arms crossed, eyes like shards of ice. Just one look from her sliced
through his chest, deeper than any scalpel ever could.
His throat tightened.
He remembered the last time he saw her like this–pinned to the floor, red–eyed, whispering through gritted teeth:
“I hate you, Harrison Lowell. I regret ever loving you.”

The memory cut deeper than the diagnosis.
He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out.
What was left to say?
He could apologize a thousand times and it still wouldn’t matter.
So he just looked at her–desperate to memorize every detail of her face.
“You think those puppy–dog eyes are gonna win me back?” Olivia’s voice dripped with mockery.
She pulled out her phone and snapped a picture of him–hollow–eyed, hooked to machines, drenched in regret.
Holding up the screen to his face, she added coldly,
“Thinking of launching a new exposé segment. Might call it Monsters in Suits. What do
you think?”
Harrison’s gaze fell to the photo.
Yeah. He looked like a man in love.
A broken man.
“Do you hate me that much?” he asked quietly, but voice cracking. “You want to see me rot in
prison?”
“If that’s what it takes for you to sleep at night… then I won’t fight it.”
Olivia’s eyes narrowed.
“You ever heard the phrase ‘belated love is cheaper than dirt‘?” she asked. “Do you even understand what that means?”
He didn’t answer.
“I’ve been right here, Harrison. For two goddamn years.”
“You know why I waited till now?”
He shook his head, slowly.
“Because I was enjoying the show,” she said, her smile razor–sharp. “You, playing the grieving
husband. The reformed sinner. It was… entertaining.”

And she had watched–everything. The hospital clean–up.
The fund for terminally ill kids.
The emergency protocols.
The crusade against corruption.
He wasn’t pretending anymore. He wasn’t doing it for her.
He was doing it… because it mattered.
“You… knew all of that?” Harrison blinked, stunned–almost breathless.
When he first started, he’d made sure it was all over the news–he wanted her to see it, to know he
was changing. That he was trying.
But eventually… he’d stopped needing the attention.
Righting the wrongs–her wrongs–gave him a peace he hadn’t felt in years.
And for the first time in his life, Harrison Lowell knew what it meant to be… useful.
“I’ve changed, Olivia. I swear I have. Please… just one more chance?”
His voice cracked open like old wood, and the light in his eyes–so long dulled by arrogance-
flickered with real hope.
