Rage ignited in her chest.

She stormed forward, helping her mother to her feet, then marched straight up to Delilah, voice cold
““What’s the matter, Delilah? Stealing men wasn’t enough for you, now you’re stealing graves
Delilah’s face faltered for the briefest second–then twisted into a picture of wounded innocence.
“I’m just trying to bury my dog,” she said, lips trembling. “I don’t know what

“Oh, I get it now. This is your latest sob story, right? Hoping Julian comes running to play the hero?“”
She tilted her head, mock sympathy curling her mouth.

Savannah ignored her, kneeling beside her mother. She gently lowered the urn into the spot Emily was meant to rest in.
Her voice was calm but razor–edged.
“Cold?” she echoed. “That’s rich–coming from you.”
Delilah swayed on her feet, white as a sheet. And then–she collapsed.

Storming toward them like a man on a mission, eyes locked on Delilah’s limp body as he scooped her into his arms with care.
Savannah stepped between the bodyguard and the urn, her body trembling with rage.
“Don’t touch her,” she snapped. Then, turning to Julian-
“That’s Emily. Those are my sister’s ashes. And you’re really just gonna stand there and let this happen?”

When it was over, Savannah dropped to her knees in the dirt. Her hands trembled as she tried to scoop what little ash she could find. But all she felt was cold.
