Chapter 6
I curled my lips in a mocking smile. “Caleb, worry about your own life for
once.”
His face froze, the words hitting him hard, probably because he’d once said the same thing to me.
But he quickly regained his usual, patronizing composure. “Brielle.”
His voice softened, almost gentle. “You can’t go through life being so petty. Everything I say is for your own good. If you could just understand that, we wouldn’t be fighting like this.”
He looked at me with that same air of condescension. “Brielle, I’ll teach
you again. Didn’t you always want me to meet your parents? This time, I swear I won’t let you down.”

I rolled my eyes and reached out to slam the door in his face.
Caleb stuck his foot out, blocking the door from closing. His tone grew urgent. “I never expected Mabel to do something like steal from you. I always thought she was a good person, but now I see her for who she is. Brielle, come home with me.”
I couldn’t take it anymore. My voice rose in frustration. “Caleb! You need someone to keep you in check because you have no power, no influence. If you don’t discipline yourself, you’ll spend your whole life as a nobody. You and Mabel are two of a kind–go supervise each other and get out of my life!”
“Brielle!” he shouted, humiliated and angry. “I can’t believe you’ve turned into this person! We dated for eight years, and you didn’t learn a single

good thing from me? Is this really what I taught you?”

He sneered, “You’re nothing but a parasite living off your parents. Without them, you’re nothing! Did it ever cross your mind what you’d do if they went bankrupt? How would a spoiled little princess like you survive? I’m thinking about your future, but you’re too short–sighted to see
it!”
My head buzzed with anger, and the man standing before me felt more and more like a stranger.
It hit me all at once–when I used to like him, I thought he was perfect, and I always blamed myself for not being good enough. But now, with that filter gone, all I could see was how ugly and twisted he really was.
I kicked his foot out of the doorway, hard. “Get out of my house!”
He didn’t budge, forcing himself to stay calm, but still trying to play the understanding boyfriend. “Brielle, there’s something seriously wrong with our relationship. Don’t run away from this. If there’s been a
misunderstanding or if you’re upset about something, just tell me. I’ll explain everything.”
He paused, then added, “If I didn’t love you, you know I wouldn’t be here. That’s not who I am.”
The next instant, someone gripped the door and yanked it open with so much force that a rush of air swept through the entryway.
At the same time, Caleb let out a strangled cry.
He jerked his foot back, his face contorted in pain, twisting his right foot in a desperate attempt to ease it.
Elliot stood beside me, looking me over. “Are you alright?”
I shook my head.

Elliot shot Caleb a cold glare as he pulled the door wide open. “Get lost.”
Caleb stared, stunned, then looked at me in disbelief and outrage. “You slept with him last night?”
A broad arm draped over my shoulders. Elliot’s tone was lazy, almost taunting. “I sleep with my girlfriend. What’s it to you?”
“Brielle, we’ve only been broken up for two or three days, and you’re already in bed with another man? Couldn’t stand being alone for even a second, could you?”
