Chapter 2 Kaleb’s Doubt
When I heard the officer’s voice, I started to wonder if Kaleb would ever feel sad about my death.
Did anything we had together still mean something to him?
I wasn’t sure about the answer.
His handsome face stayed calm as he asked, “So, it’s just the wedding
dress?”
“Yeah, just the dress,” the officer replied. “But we think Ms. Brook might be in danger, or maybe it’s a suicide case. There’s something on the dress that-”

Kaleb cut him off. “I don’t know who made the report, but I know
Savannah. She wouldn’t take her life. She’s done things like this too many times before. Don’t waste your time on her little game.”
His response left the officer stunned. “They just married the day before. yet Kaleb shows no concern for her at all,” he thought.
The officer started to speak again, but Kaleb hung up.
All this left me laughing at myself for ever believing he still cared about
- mc.
“Kaleb, I’m dead! The police called, and you should take it seriously,” I screamed, but no one could hear me.
Alena moved closer, slipping her arm around him. “Kaleb, what if Vannah is really in danger?”
He frowned and replied. “She did sound weak when she called. yesterday.”
“Maybe she’s just upset because I tried on her wedding dress. She probably threw it into the river out of spite. But we love each other, and I let you marry her. What else does she want?
“That dress was made for me. I just wore it once. Is that really such a big deal? It cost a fortune, and she tossed it like it was nothing. Now she’s dragged the police into it. She’s clearly just trying to embarrass you and your family.” Alena complained.
Kaleb’s unease disappeared, replaced by that same old look of disdain.
A week ago, I was asked to try on the wedding dress, but when I showed up. Alena was already wearing it. She had even had it altered to fit her
better.

I told her to take it off, not even raising my voice. My family took her side, saying, “It’s just a dress. What’s the big deal if your sister tries it on?”
She stood there in the gown, holding onto Kaleb like they were a couple.
My family’s favoritism toward Alena started the day she fell into the river at five years old. I tried to save her but couldn’t.
I hit my head on a rock and passed out. When I woke up, I learned Kaleb had saved me, while Alena vanished into the water.
That accident tied Kaleb and me together as childhood sweethearts.
When Kaleb turned eighteen, his dad Victor Harrington remarried and brought Alena into the family. Kaleb loathed her.
Three years ago, at my engagement party, Alena announced her memory had returned. She claimed she was my long–lost sister.

While everyone was congratulating Kaleb and me, she suddenly dropped to her knees. “Savannah, why did you lure me out and push me into the river?” she cried, gripping my dress.
I stood there, completely baffled. I hadn’t known she was my sister back
then.
But I had always treated her well, even after marrying Kaleb.
I took a moment to process what she had said.
Alena continued. “Please. Savannah, I’ll do whatever you want. I won’t fight you over anything. Just don’t hurt me again. I miss Mom, Dad, and Brother so much. Please, let me come home.”
My dad. Carsen Brook, slapped me across the face. “I can’t believe you’d be so cruel. She was just five years old. How could you do that to her?”
Panicking, I said, “It’s not true. I didn’t push her into the river. I swear I didn’t!”
“She’s your sister. Why would she make up something so awful?” My mom. Shelby, held Alena tightly, tears streaming down her face. “Oh, my poor girl, you must have suffered so much all these years.”
Yeah. Alena was my sister, but why was she doing this to me?
My engagement party turned into a family drama where I was branded a cruel sister.
My makeup was smudged with tears, and my voice was hoarse from crying as I tried to defend myself.
Victor Harrington, Kaleb’s dad, gave him a look, urging him to take me away and fix my makeup.

The disappointment in Victor’s eyes was unmistakable.
Holding Kaleb’s hand tightly, I begged him to believe me. He pulled me close. gently patting my back. “Of course, I believe you. You’ve always been so kind and sweet, Vannah.”
But Kaleb wasn’t the man I used to know.
Bitterness and sadness washed over me as I watched him and Alena in
bed.
As a ghost, my eyes stayed dry, unable to cry.
I felt hollow, like an empty shell.
I tried to leave, but I couldn’t move more than three meters away from
Kaleb.
Stuck there, I had no choice but to watch as they got up. Alena sat at the dressing table, wearing my new clothes.
Alena held up an eyebrow pencil and coyly suggested Kaleb draw her
brows.
She acted like they were newlyweds.
Kaleb paused as his eyes caught our wedding photo. “No, Ally. We agreed last night that everything would go back to how it was, right?”
Alena dropped her gaze, looking sad. “I get it. I won’t come between you and Vannah anymore.”
Kaleb pulled out his phone and tried calling me again, but no one answered.
The police might find my body if he called them back right away.

But he didn’t. With a grim look, he slipped his phone back into his pocket.
“Savannah. I’ve been way too easy on you.” he muttered with a snort.
“Yeah, she’s such a pro at getting her way. Don’t stress. She’s probably back at our parents‘ home, ignoring your calls just to make you worry.”
Kaleb’s face hardened. “It’s the family party today. Savannah wouldn’t just bail on something this big. Let’s go back and see what she’s up to.”
