He deluded himself with this delay.
Perhaps Jessica was just momentarily confused, impulsively filing for divorce?
From college until now, she had never experienced a day of hardship.
Once she encountered setbacks out there, once she missed him, she would surely come back docilely..
Maxwell tried to convince himself as he lay down to rest.
However, the empty space beside him felt unbearably strange. With just one person missing, he found it impossibly difficult to adjust.
Without Jessica’s distinctive scent surrounding him, he struggled to fall asleep.
He closed his eyes, and throughout the night, countless images of Jessica sleeping in his arms flashed through his mind.
When he hazily opened his eyes, his arms were empty, leaving him with a profound sense of loss.
For three consecutive days, Maxwell went nowhere, silently waiting at home for someone who wouldn’t return.
He even ignored Olivia’s invitations, merely sending perfunctory replies: “Wait a bit longer. I’m busy these few days. I’ll come see, you next week.”
Claire, seeing him barely sleeping or eating, couldn’t help but speak up:
“Mr. Reed, you can’t go on like this–your body won’t handle it. If Mrs. Reed saw you this way, she’d surely be heartbroken.”
“Now that Mrs. Reed isn’t coming back, aren’t you going to look for her? Girls are easily coaxed. If you sincerely apologize, she might forgive you and come back to remarry you.”
“Mrs. Reed has always been soft–hearted; she just can’t tolerate betrayal. Besides, that Olivia doesn’t seem like a good person.”
At this point, Claire became somewhat hesitant.
Maxwell stared at her coldly, his piercing eyes narrowing slightly.
“Has Jessica bribed you to speak well of her and badly of Olivia? Are you trying to make me send Olivia away so Jessica can get what she wants?” he accused.
“I knew it! Jessica would do anything to force me to get rid of Olivia! Even this divorce is just her way of pressuring me, isn’t it?” Maxwell snapped. “Claire, remember, you work for the Reed family–you should listen to me, not Jessica!”
Hearing this, Claire could barely contain her anger.
She never expected her good intentions would be so thoroughly misconstrued by Maxwell!–
She couldn’t hold back any longer and stood up for Jessica: “Mr. Reed, even if you fire me today, I must speak the truth!”
“I’m not lying, nor have I been bribed by Mrs. Reed. Over ten days ago, Olivia came to your home deliberately to provoke Mrs. Reed, saying all your future projects would be hers, and even demanding Mrs. Reed do research for her.”

“If you don’t believe me, check the security footage. I’ve worked for the Reed family for many years–I have no reason to lie.”
With that, she pointed to a nearby security camera, her chest heaving with indignation.
Maxwell coldly studied her, repeatedly assessing whether she was lying.
An unsettling feeling gradually rose within him, as if something unpredictable was about to happen.
After a long silence, he still had the security footage retrieved.
The footage clearly showed the sequence of events, exactly as Claire had described.
Olivia… wasn’t as innocent and pure as he had imagined.
