Chapter 22
Professor Smith was deeply sympathetic, comfortingly patting her shoulder.
“It’s not an imposition. We’re friends, and soon we’ll be working partners. You can rely on us for anything.”
With that, he sent a message on his phone, and moments later, a group of security guards appeared, surrounding Maxwell.
“Please leave, sir,” Professor Smith warned. “Jessica doesn’t welcome you. Stop bothering her, or you’ll face consequences!”
He signaled to the guards, who simultaneously aimed their guns at Maxwell.
Maxwell’s face paled in waves, utterly helpless.
This was a foreign country, not his territory, and his fists were no match for firearms.
With no other option, he backed away several steps, watching helplessly as Jessica departed.
He gazed deeply at her retreating figure, a wave of bitter agony washing over him.
He had hurt her before, but only because of a misunderstanding. He would never harm her again–why wouldn’t she forgive him? Would it be so bad to give him one last chance?
Maxwell’s heart filled with bitterness, yet he was powerless.
He fixed his gaze on the young man beside her, his eyes darkening.
Was this man the reason she remained so cold toward him? Had she fallen for someone else? How could she care so much for a man she’d just met?
The inability to take her back didn’t mean he couldn’t deal with this man!
Maxwell gradually shifted his focus, departing for his hotel under the watchful eyes of the security guards.
For two consecutive days, bodyguards monitored him from below, preventing him from disturbing Jessica again.
As they wished, Maxwell went nowhere.
Only when the bodyguards relaxed their vigilance did he visit Adrian’s university, avoiding Jessica entirely.
Adrian had just left the laboratory when Maxwell blocked his path.
“Your name is Adrian Pierce, right? Your family is of modest means, and studying abroad can’t be easy. I can give you a substantial sum of money if you permanently leave Jessica’s side.”
Adrian regarded Maxwell expressionlessly, his demeanor completely unchanged as he refused without hesitation: “No.”
He turned to leave in another direction, but Maxwell blocked him again.
“Is my offer insufficient? Name your pride. As long as you leave Jessica, I’ll meet it. Otherwise, your family back home might face consequences.”
“Doesn’t matter. Do as you please,” Adrian replied with perfect calm. “If you can touch my family, I’ll admit you’re impressive.”
Unbeknownst to Maxwell, while Adrian’s family appeared ordinary to outsiders, they were actually classified government research
scientists.

The Pierce family was dedicated to their scientific pursuits, Adrian even more so.
Exceptionally intelligent yet emotionally detached, he approached everything with pure academic interest. His participation in this project stemmed solely from scientific curiosity.
Money didn’t interest him if he were to sell his research findings, he could easily become wealthy.
But that held no appeal for him.
Whatever Maxwell might do to his family didn’t concern him either.
Adrian calmly stepped aside, attempting to leave again.
Maxwell’s eyes darkened, surprised by the young man’s impassivity.
Before he could speak again, Jessica approached with a frown, quickly positioning herself protectively in front of Adrian while eyeing Maxwell warily.
“What are you doing here? Unleashing your anger on him for no reason again?”
“Is this really how you see me? As someone so violent?” Maxwell asked incredulously.
“Perhaps not before, but after Olivia appeared, how many times did you torture me? Would you call that few?” she retorted.
She remained completely vigilant, fearing Adrian might become her replacement as Maxwell’s next victim.
After all, Maxwell only needed the slightest pretext to hurt someone.
Seeing her attitude, Maxwell felt as if he’d been plunged into an icy abyss.
She was actually afraid of him? Had she become this wary, this guarded against him?
