Chapter 13
Leopold paused slightly–could she still be asleep?
A picture of Clarisse sleeping soundly flashed in his mind: her thick lashes casting faint shadows on her face, her red lips slightly parted, sometimes she unconsciously nestling into his embrace.
At the thought, a slow smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
He tapped on Clarisse’s profile picture–a proud and aloof ragdoll cat with piercing blue eyes that seemed to look down on everyone, so
much like her.
His finger lingered on the screen as he finally sent one last message: “I’ll be back tomorrow night. Come get me.”
The message fell into silence.
Leopold set his phone down and called Beta. “How’s the inquiry I asked you to institute going?”
“Alpha Leopold, it’s confirmed. That pearl necklace will be auctioned tonight. It’s definitely the one Clarisse’s mother wore before she passed.”
“Arrange a car.
Half an hour later, Leopold appeared at the auction house. Dressed in a black suit, his gaze cold and distant behind gold–rimmed glasses, he politely declined several socialites‘ advances.
When the pearl necklace was presented, a murmur swept through the room.
The bidding climbed steadily, but Leopold held back.
Only when the price reached 100 million did he slowly raise his hand, “200 million.”
The room fell silent.
In the end, the necklace sold to Leopold for a staggering price.
On the ride back, the Beta finally spoke up, unable to hold back any longer. “Leopold, when you didn’t lend Clarisse money to buy that necklace, she seemed really upset… If she knew you’d gone to such lengths to find the real heirloom and spent so much to win it, she’d be happy.”
Leopold fingered the velvet box, the image of Clarisse’s radiant face flashing before him. “Will she be happy?”
“Of course she will!” The Beta said excitedly. “Clarisse’s straightforward; her emotions are written all over her face. She can be a bit spoiled, but she’s kind–hearted. Last time, a new Beta spilled coffee, and while others would have scolded, she said, ‘Good, I wanted a new dress anyway.“”
But as he spoke, the Beta suddenly felt the car’s temperature drop.
Leopold’s face in the rearview mirror had darkened ominously.
The Beta quickly fell silent. “Sorry, Alpha Leopold, I said too much.”
“Do you like her?” Leopold’s voice was cold.
The Beta’s hands trembled on the wheel, nearly hitting the guardrail.
“I’m really sorry, Alpha Leopold.”
“Be honest.”
His Beta took a deep breath. “Who wouldn’t like someone as beautiful and friendly as Clarisse? But don’t worry, I know she only has eyes for you…”
He smiled bitterly. “So I’ve only… had a secret crush, never showed it.”

Leopold’s expression softened slightly.
The Beta then suddenly gathered courage to continue, “But I also hope you treat her better.”
“What exactly are you trying to say?”
“I mean you shouldn’t like Grace one moment, then treat Clarisse well the next. Clarisse deserves your whole heart.”
“Do you mean I like Grace one moment and Clarisse the next?”
Leopold narrowed his eyes, sensing something off. “What exactly do you mean?”
Since the subject was out in the open, Beta went all in.
“I mean exactly that! Alpha Leopold, I’ve always wanted to ask–do you really like Grace, or Clarisse?”
“Of course, it’s Clarisse.”
No sooner had Leopold said this than the Beta slammed on the brakes, tires screeching against the pavement.
“Sorry, Alpha Leopold!” The Beta apologized frantically, a cold sweat breaking out across his back.
Surprisingly, Leopold didn’t get angry.
He just lifted his eyes coldly, peering through his glasses at the Beta in the rearview mirror. “That answer shocks you so much?”
The Beta’s hands shook slightly on the steering wheel. Did that answer just shock me? It was more like a total upheaval of everything I thought I knew.
But he dared not say it outright, so he hinted carefully, “But… I’ve seen you treating Grace better than Clarisse…”
