Chapter 16
“Leopold, what did you say… you don’t like me?” Grace’s voice suddenly rose, the color draining from her face instantly. “How could that be? You clearly…”
“Sorry to have given you that illusion,” Leopold said calmly, almost cruelly. “There were too ma needed a human shield.”
people chasing me back then. I
I was just a human shield?!
Her face instantly turned pale.
He paused, then continued, “As compensation, I transferred money to your account every year. I thought you knew it was just a transaction.”
“Later, when you took the hit in the car accident and got injured, that’s why I’ve complied with your requests all these years.” His eyes settled coldly on her ashen face. “Besides that, there’s nothing else.”
The room erupted.
Admiring glances instantly turned to scorn and contempt. Whispered insults washed over Grace like a tide.
“I told you, with Alpha Leopold’s status, how could he possibly fall for someone like her…”
“She really fooled everyone acting like it was mutual. It turns out it was all in her head.”
“Alpha Leopold’s famous for not being interested in women. Even the queen of cinema threw herself at him naked, he tossed her right out. Who does Grace think she is?”
“I heard her mother was a mistress who clawed her way up? Like mother, like daughter. Grace is just another gold–digger chasing power.”
Each word stabbed Grace like a knife and made she feel hurt.
She valued her pride above all. She’d planned this confession for three whole months, invited all the elite, just to publicly become
Auremere Pack’s Luna.
But now it was all ruined.
She trembled all over, her nails digging painfully into her palms.
If Leopold didn’t like her, then who did he like?
A terrifying thought surfaced in her mind: could it be… Clarisse?
The thought nearly drove her mad.
Grace shook her head fiercely, refusing to believe it.
The next second, Leopold had already turned to leave.
“Leopold!” She grabbed his sleeve with the last shred of dignity she had. “All these years, have you really… never once felt anything for
me?”
Leopold pulled his arm away. “Never.”
That word pierced Grace’s heart like a blade.
Her legs gave way and she collapsed to the floor. Her carefully styled hair came loose and tears blurred her makeup.
Leopold didn’t look back as he left the banquet hall, striding quickly toward the waiting luxury car.
The Beta had already prepared everything he had ordered.
“Alpha Leopold, everything’s ready,” The Beta said, handing over a gift box. “A sapphire brooch, and the cake from Clarisse’s favorite

dessert shop.”
Leopold took out his phone and sent Clarisse a message:
“Come to the wolf castle in the Southern Territory. I have something for you.”
But there was no reply.
He called again, but the phone was still off.
Frowning slightly, he typed again and the messages read:
“Are you still angry?”
“I had you locked in the Pack Prison before because you really were out of control, and Grace deserved an explanation.”
“But I’ve taken care of everything. Not a hair on your head was harmed.”
“You faked those injuries yourself later, pretended to faint in the pack hospital to make me worry. Didn’t I play along and pretend to be fooled?”
His finger hovered over the screen before he added.
“And that necklace. I didn’t lend you money because you got it wrong–your mother’s real heirloom is in Moonrest Hollow. The one before was just the same style.”
“I’ve now bought the genuine one.”
One message after another sent, but all fell into the void.
Leopold rubbed his temples and sent one more. The message read:
“You even burned down the wolf castle. If that’s not enough, do you want to burn another one?”
After a long wait, the phone remained silent.
His patience finally ran out. Leopold called Alpha Vexley directly, “Is Clary home? Tell her to answer.”
On the other end, Alpha Vexley’s voice sounded surprised: “Leopold, don’t you know? Clary… has already bonded with the Alpha in the Noctelle Pack as I asked!”
