But then I looked up at Nicolai. He had clearly heard what Isabelle said, yet he claimed he “didn’t take it seriously.”
“He wasn’t my first love,” I sighed. “When he was pursuing me, he spread some rumors. I got angry and warned him off. I guess this
is his revenge…
Dillian Nash was handsome and popular. Being rejected by me must have bruised his ego so badly that he held a grudge. He delib-
erately spread rumors that we were together, and then my “I only marry rich men” comment must have really stung. He’d gone out,
made a name for himself, and probably came back wanting to humiliate me.
Only to find that everything he had was worthless in my eyes.
So, to get his revenge, he went after Isabelle, someone he would have otherwise never had a chance with. After a whirlwind roma-
nce, she fell for him. And that’s why she would hide their relationship from me and conspire with him to ruin me.
Isabelle, like me, didn’t have a happy childhood. She always longed for a family of her own. A calculating man like Dillian would
have seen right through her, and his carefully constructed fantasy would have been impossible for her to resist.
To think she would be willing to go to jail for him.

Still, to go to such lengths just for revenge… it seemed illogical. I frowned.
“How is Dillian Nash’s company doing?” I asked.
“It’s no match for Payne Industries,” Nicolai replied quickly.

How many companies were a match for Payne Industries? What was he trying to say? He knew what I was asking. I just looked at
him, my face a blank mask.
“His company has a cash flow problem.”
No wonder.
“I want Dillian Nash to lose everything.”
When it came to corporate warfare, Nicolai was the king.
“Consider it done, my dear wife.” A corner of his mouth hooked up. He rested his chin in the crook of my shoulder, suddenly in a very
good mood.
I rarely saw this side of Nicolai either. Or maybe I had never really seen him at all.
