Chapter 1
Riley and I were to be married on the same day. The night before the wedding, she said she wanted to share a bed with me–to stay up all night, talking
like sisters.
But when I woke the next morning, she was gone. I found out she had stolen my wedding gown and climbed into the Kingsley’s bridal carriage, impersonating me, and married into the Kingsley estate in my place.
In my previous life, I had been furious when I discovered Riley had taken my place. I caused a scene at the ceremony. Humiliated, she tried to throw herself against a pillar to take her own life. But the Earl Kingsley stopped her. He declared that Riley was already carrying his child—and that his heir must be a firstborn. If I still wished to enter the Kingsley estate, I could only do so as a mistress.
Everyone laughed at me.
During the struggle, Riley fell and nearly lost the baby. The Earl flew into a rage and forced the Donovan family to lock me in a convent, claiming I needed to pray for the health of their child.
Riley went on to give birth to a son and truly became the Countess Kingsley. As for me, I died of illness alone in the convent.
Now, I opened my eyes.
Outside, the joyous clamor of wedding celebrations filled the air. The bridal procession had just arrived to fetch my stepsister.
“Miss Riley, please step into the wedding carriage.”
The master of ceremonies pushed open the door cheerfully. “It’s time. Miss Riley, please come with us.‘
But the moment she saw my face, she let out a scream as if she’d seen a ghost.
“Miss Rowena–why are you still here?!”
“}
Guests and relatives, startled by her scream, rushed into the room. When they saw me standing there, the whole place descended into chaos.
“What’s Rowena doing here? Then where’s Riley?”
“Wait–was that Riley who got into the carriage? My God, they’ve married off the wrong girl!”
My stepmother Vivian entered just then. The moment she saw me, she covered her mouth and shrieked, “Rowena! How could you be so reckless? How could you let your sister marry in your place? Even if you didn’t want to marry the Earl, you should have told your father and me. How could you trick your sister into doing something like this?”
Her words twisted the truth in front of everyone, and the way they looked at me immediately changed. From their expressions, I could see what they were now thinking–Vivian had made it sound as if I had refused to marry the Earl and convinced my innocent sister to take my place.
I looked at Vivian’s face–she wore a mask of astonishment, but her eyes gleamed with satisfaction.
In my previous life, it had been her and Riley’s scheme all along. They had come up with the idea of the bride switch, sending her own daughter into the Kingsley family.
To my father, she claimed I was selfish and inconsiderate of the family’s interests, and that I had tricked Riley into taking my place. She played the part of a pained and helpless mother, and my father believed her.
My father had been away to defend the border and couldn’t make it back for the wedding. Vivian had managed the Donovan estate for years by then–of course he trusted her. He truly believed I was the one who had brought disgrace to both families.
And now, in this life, she once again told the lies. How could I let her succeed again?
I held my head in my hands, wincing in pain. “What’s going on? Last night, Riley gave me a glass of milk before bed. I drank it and fell asleep–I’ve never slept that long before. My head hurts so badly…”
The moment I spoke, the expressions of people in the room changed again. These were all seasoned women who had managed households for years–of course they sensed something was off.
My aunt Lillian rushed forward and took me into her arms. “Oh, my poor Rowena… You’ve fallen into the trick of your sister. She stole your wedding and married the Earl Kingsley in your place!”
Vivian shrieked, “Nonsense! Your sister is far too naive and gentle, She would never harm you!”
I pointed to the empty milk cup. “Aunt, please–have someone examine that cup. That milk made me feel so dizzy… I don’t want to believe would hurt me. I truly don’t.”

Of course, I had already sprinkled sleeping powder in the cup myself. As soon as someone tested it, the presence of the sedative would be confirmed.
Lillian immediately snatched up the cup and stared Vivian down. “You’re Riley’s mother. Now that your daughter has taken another’s place in marriage, I can’t trust you. Someone–go fetch a physician from Harmonia Hospital!”
