Chapter 4
After nearly every drop of blood was drained from my body, I lay weak and barely breathing on the hospital bed, my face pale as death.
Adrian stood by my bedside, his eyes cold and distant.
“Don’t bother pretending like you’re dying, I know Sea Nymphs have incredible regenerative abilities. This is nothing to you.”
That was a lie I had made up in my last life–just to keep him from worrying.
The truth was, a Sea Nymph’s blood was as vital as her heart. Drawing it out was as good as killing her. It was a one–way road. There was no coming back.
I tried to speak, but my lips wouldn’t move. My throat was dry. Adrian scoffed and turned to leave.
When I opened my eyes again, I was staring into Lydia’s wide, doe–like gaze.
“To thank you for your generous gift of blood, I’ve prepared something special for you.”
I followed her gaze to the window and saw the Elder, dangling from the same helicopter as before, barely clinging to life.
“What are you doing? Let him go!”
I grabbed Lydia’s sleeve in a panic, only for her to slap me hard across the face. I fell back against the bed, too weak to fight back.
She looked down at me, eyes filled with venom.
“You’re just a filthy little village girl from some coastal dump. What makes you think you can steal
my man?”
She smiled, eyes curved sweetly as she tilted her head.
“Well then–since Miss Hayes insists, let’s let him go.”
“No! Don’t! Don’t-!”
I watched in horror as the rope was severed.
“Bang!” The Elder’s body crashed into the courtyard below my window.

His frail eyes filled with tears just before they slowly closed.
My whole body shook. Hot tears streamed down my cheeks, unstoppable.
Just like in my past life, I had failed him again. Because of me–he was still dead.
Lydia grabbed my hair and shoved my face into the ground.
“Come near Adrian again, and this’ll be your fate too.”
I buried the Elder at his favorite place–on the edge of the sea cliff.
Then I changed into the wedding dress he’d prepared for me before he died, and walked into the grand, gold–trimmed banquet hall.
Today was Adrian’s birthday. And the day he would die.
As I entered, all eyes turned to me.
“Is her dress made of… scales? I heard she’s the one who broke the curse for the golden heir. Don’t tell me–she’s marrying him tonight?”
Adrian was holding Lydia in one arm, raising his glass with the other. The moment he saw me, his face darkened instantly.
“Who gave you permission to show up like this?”

Tears instantly welled in Lydia’s eyes. “Miss Hayes… I know you saved Adrian. If you insist on marrying into the Millers, then I’ll leave…”
Adrian pulled her closer into his arms, glaring at me with ice in his veins.
“Someone strip her dress off. Now.”

The guards closed in. Rough hands grabbed at me, trying to rip the gown from my body. I fought back, screaming, “I’m not here to marry you, Adrian Miller! You’re not even my groom!”
He let out a cold, mocking laugh. “I warned you. Don’t upset Lydia.”
“Take off her dress. Throw her out. And never let her set foot in this house again-”
A voice interrupted from the entrance. Low. Gravelly.
“I’d like to see you try.”

He finally arrived.
