Chapter 5
Today was Leah’s birthday, but for some
reason, Logan couldn’t shake the unease
lingering in his chest.
She arrived dressed to impress, clinging to
his arm with bold familiarity, utterly
unbothered.

“Logan, I’ll be in heels all day. Will that hurt
the baby?” she leaned in, her tone sweet and
teasing.
“Logan? What are you thinking about!” She

gave his arm a hard shake, snapping him out
of his thoughts.
“What?”
Leah pouted, her voice carrying a trace of
complaint. “What were you thinking just
now?”

Logan tapped her nose with a smile. “You
insisted on heels to look good. Little princess,
you’re already more than beautiful enough.”
“You’re just flattering me!” she giggled, but
barovon porrowed.

her eyes narrowed. “Still, you didn’t answer.
What were you thinking about?”
Of course, Logan couldn’t admit that ever
since seeing Cecilia at the hospital, she
hadn’t left his mind. So instead, he replied,
“Your sister still hasn’t shown up. I’m just
worried she might ruin our plans.”

They had planned to publicly announce
Cecilia’s pregnancy at the party. That way,
when she eventually failed to give birth, she’d
be forced to claim Leah’s child as her own.

A flicker of malice crossed Leah’s eyes. “I
invited her myself, and you told her. How dare
she be late?”
Logan suddenly remembered something.
Today wasn’t just Leah’s birthday. It was also
Cecilia’s.
After her adoption, Cecilia inherited the
birthday of the Ellis family’s eldest daughter.
But Logan knew that day had never brought
her joy.

Even the usually composed and graceful
Helen Ellis would, on this day, glare at her
with tear–filled eyes and scream, “My real
daughter is still out there. Who knows what
she’s going through? What right do you have
to celebrate her birthday? What right!”
Then came her adoptive father’s slap. “Get
out! Are you trying to upset your mother even
more?”
“Get out! Don’t let me see you again today!”
Those were stories Cecilia had once told him.

Ever since the first time he’d found her
wandering the streets and taken her home,
Logan had waited outside her house every
year on this day, ready to catch her when she got thrown out. It had always been just the
two of them celebrating her birthday in
secret.
Back then, he had truly wanted to protect her
for a lifetime.
But after Leah was found and brought back,
the Ellis family began throwing lavish
birthday banquets for her on this very date.

To cement Leah’s place, the Ellis family did
everything they could to erase Cecilia’s
existence. They even forced her to leave
college.
It was as if by wiping her out, this day could once again be filled with joy for them.
Every year, as a close family friend, Logan received an invitation to Leah’s grand
banquet.
The first year after their marriage, he had

turned to her and said softly, “Cecilia, I’m
sorry. I really want to spend your birthday
with you, but you know how deep the ties run
between our families. I can’t just skip it.”
“We’re already married. You have me for 364 days a year. Missing just this one day isn’t
such a big deal, is it?”
He had said it with guilt in his eyes, and
though the words pierced her, she still nodded, just to make things easier for him.
But by the second and third years, he hadn’t

even bothered with an excuse.
Eventually, he forgot that this day belonged
to her, too.
No wonder she had grown distant.

That realization brought him a flicker of relief.
Logan gently slipped out of Leah’s grasp and
walked to a quiet corner to make a call.
Cecilia picked up almost immediately.
He softened his voice, coaxing, “Cecilia,

where are you? Why haven’t you come yet?”
Her voice was calm, even serene. “I’m not
coming. I wouldn’t want to upset Leah. But I did prepare a gift. It’ll be delivered soon.”
Her tone was light, almost airy, with no trace
of resentment, only a strange calm, tinged
with quiet satisfaction.
A chill crept up Logan’s spine.
He tried again, gently coaxing, “I know today is your birthday too. You’re upset, I get it. Just

come over, and after the party, I’ll take you out to celebrate. I promise.”
“It’s been a long time since we celebrated your birthday together. How about we go back to that park we used to visit?”
It was the place he had first found her and the place he had once proposed. Surely, she wouldn’t say no.
“No need. You two enjoy yourselves.”
“Cecilia!” Logan’s voice dropped to a low

growl. “Didn’t I tell you to come? You’re not
even listening to me anymore? A tantrum has
its limits, you…”
She had hung up.
And when he called back, the line wouldn’t
connect.
She had blocked him.
Logan’s grip tightened around his phone, his temples throbbing with fury. He looked as though he might crush the device in his fist.

Leah came over, her fingers curling delicately
around his arm. Her voice was soft, sugar-
sweet. “It’s my fault. I must’ve upset Sister
again. I just thought she’d been down lately
and wanted to lift her spirits.”
“But Logan, why is she taking it out on you,
too? She always used to listen to you the
most, didn’t she?”
Logan stood motionless for a long moment.
Then, his voice turned cold as steel. He
raised his phone again and dialed another

number.
“Lewis,” he said slowly, each word soaked in
threat. “Cecilia’s getting out of hand. Teach

her a lesson. Make sure she remembers how
to behave.”
