Chapter 5
“You talked to Lily like that and she didn’t even get mad! She even offered to apologize to you!”
“Do you have any idea how long she saved up for that bouquet? Six months of her own allowance! And you told her to get out!”
I was already on the verge of losing it, tears burning in my eyes as I shoved the two of them toward the door.
“Jason, you knew Grandpa’s allergic to lilies! And you still let her bring them!”
That’s when it finally clicked for him.
“I–I’m sorry. It was the only cheap bouquet left at the flower shop and I panicked…”
“Get out!”
I screamed so loud it tore my throat. But I was still too late. Grandpa stepped out of his study.
The moment he took in a breath, his face turned red and swollen. He clutched his throat, gasping.
“Call an ambulance!”
In the ER, I paced the hallway like a madwoman, my hands shaking.Jason stood off to the side, silent, unsure of what to say.
Then Lily started crying—and, of course, he went and put his arm around her.
“It’s okay. Her grandpa’s gonna be fine.”
“Fine?”
I turned around, eyes bloodshot. I was practically snarling.
“Jason, you knew. You knew niy grandfather is the only family I have left, and you still brought lilies into our home!”
“All because they were cheap? All because you wanted to protect Lily’s fragile little pride?”
“You nearly killed him. You nearly took away the only person I have!”
I waited for him to look even a little guilty. Instead, he just stared back at me, calm as ever.
“Scarlett, do you even realize how crazy you’re acting right now? You’re being a complete psycho.”
That one sentence nailed me to the ground. And right in front of everyone, Lily dropped to her knees.
“I’m sorry! I’m so sorry! I’ll pay for the treatment, no matter what it costs–even if I have to sell my body, I’ll pay!”
Her classmates arrived just in time to witness it. They rushed over, immediately pulling her up like some tragic heroine.
“Scarlett, what’s wrong with you? It’s just an allergy. Take a pill and move on–it’s not like anyone died.”
“Wow. Didn’t think you were that kind of person. Just because you’re rich doesn’t mean you can treat people like trash. Don’t worry, Lily–we’d rather all chip in than let you go through this alone.”
The flood of accusations drowned out everything else.
But through the noise, I could still clearly see Jason’s face–that look of cold, detached disappointment.
The same Jason whorence said he’d take on the world for me, Was now standing on the other side… with them.
My legs gave out. I collapsed.
Jason instinctively tried to catch me, but I pushed him off, trembling
“I don’t want you.”
Thugged my knees, staring blankly at the wall. “I don’t want you, Jason Westwood.”

He shot to his feet, chest heaving.
“You said it. You remember that–it came from you. Let’s see how long you last this time.”
Then he turned and left, surrounded by a crowd. Lily turned back just before disappearing down the hall, and on her face–clear as day
-was a smug, victorious smile.
I didn’t care. I kept my eyes locked on the red glow above the
emergency room doors.
And then, through the chaos, I heard two familiar voices yelling my name.
“Scarlett!”
“Scarlett!”
Something inside me snapped, and the tears came pouring out.
And just like that, the boy who once owned my heart was gone from my
life.
Jason, I will never forgive you.
Lucas pulled me into his arms, holding me like I was made of glass. Harper stood by me, crying quietly too.
