Chapter 23

The car crash left Ryan paralyzed from the waist down.

After flying back to the States, Ryan dove straight into work.

Even stuck in a wheelchair, his business game was still strong and he kept landing clients.

His coworkers felt bad watching him.

‘Why’d he put himself through all that shit? Went in this huge circle and got nothing, plus lost everything

hat mattered.”

“They were so damn good together. Everything was perfect, then he randomly decided to chase someone else. Remember when Ryan first started here? Dude was on top of the world. Now he looks dead inside.”

‘Working himself to death isn’t gonna fix anything!”

‘Man… we’ll never see a power couple like that again.”

That day, Ryan was grinding at his desk like always.

Some guy from accounting walked in with a stack of papers, asking to use the shredder.

Ryan just nodded, not really paying attention.

He was reaching for the journal he kept on his desk when he realized it wasn’t there.

Panic hit as he searched everywhere, then he spotted it in the accounting guy’s hand – about to go into the

shredder with a bunch of old documents.

‘NO!”

Ryan’s eyes went huge as he lunged forward, but it was too late.

The guy had already fed everything into the machine.

Ryan threw himself at the shredder, but Stella’s journal was already being torn apart page by page.

All those memories, getting shredded to pieces.

He tried frantically to save the shredded pieces, but all he could grab were tiny scraps.

Fragment after fragment impossible to put back together into whole pages.

Just like his broken heart.

“No, no…”

Life had played the cruelest joke on him.

All those emotions he’d been bottling up finally found a crack, and everything came flooding out.

He couldn’t pretend to be okay anymore.

Every wall he’d built came crashing down.

Ryan collapsed in his wheelchair, tears streaming down his face, his whole body shaking uncontrollably.

His coworker freaked out. When he saw the journal fragments, he froze.

The handwriting looked super familiar – after working together for years, he instantly recognized Stella’s

writing.

This was the only thing Stella had left behind for Ryan.

The guy panicked, not knowing how to fix this: “Shit, I’m so sorry! I didn’t see the journal underneath. Let me pay you back or something, or maybe we can piece it together with tape…”

But Ryan couldn’t hear a word he was saying.

‘Why… why did this have to happen…”

‘Stella, Stella… won’t you even let me keep this one last piece of you?”

Ryan was mumbling to himself.

He clutched those paper scraps like they still held Stella’s warmth.

After what felt like forever, Ryan managed to reconstruct most of the journal from the shredded pieces.

But no matter how hard he searched, there were still gaps he couldn’t fill.

He carefully taped it back together with clear tape, afraid to let even a speck of dust touch it.

That night, he fell asleep clutching the damaged journal.

He had a dream.

He dreamed about his first day at the company, when a girl with a bright smile asked if she could sit next to

him.

It was love at first sight, and they quickly fell head over heels for each other.

They kissed and held each other, walked along the beach, danced under the stars.

They’d fight sometimes, but always made up quickly.

They got married.

Years later, they had a baby together. They weren’t young anymore, but she was still as beautiful as ever to

him.

They grew old together.

On his deathbed, he held her hand, completely unafraid of dying.

Then the scene shifted and the dream shattered.

He watched helplessly as she walked away from him. No matter how much he screamed her name or how fast he ran, he couldn’t reach her.

No, don’t go. He was shouting.

Darkness rushed in like a tidal wave, swallowing her completely, leaving him drowning in endless despair.

Ryan jolted awake, gasping for air.

But the next second, tears started streaming down his face again.

His Stella really didn’t want him anymore.
