The next moment, Emily started crying softly.
“Madeline, I know you’ve liked Hugo ever since I brought you in from the street. You’re upset that he chose me, but love has to go both ways. Hugo and I have been married for five years, and our baby is already a month old. If you’re going to make a scene, then fine. I can share him with you from now on.”
Hugo clearly didn’t see that coming. His face shifted, and then he put on an angry look.
“Emily, what are you saying? I told you—you’re the only woman I’ll ever marry. There’s no one else!”

I was stunned by their words.
I didn’t expect her to twist everything and pretend to be me.
And now, she had made me take her place.
Hugo obviously knew what was going on. He was playing along and even helped her replace my identity.
They even had a child together.
The woman who had shoved me before suddenly chimed in, “Oh, so you’re that cleaner Emily mentioned? I can’t believe you’d be bold enough to steal someone’s husband in front of everyone!”
I was being blamed for something I didn’t do, accused like I was some kind of homewrecker. It was almost funny.

“Emily, are you still pretending? You’re not even ashamed? You forgot who saved you when you were freezing in the snow? You told me you’d do anything to repay me. And now, this is how you repay me? You secretly had my husband’s baby and tried to take my place?”
Before I could say more, someone threw wine at my face.
It was the same woman again, holding her glass and grinning with satisfaction. “You’re the one who needs a reality check. Everyone knows who Emily is. She’s Mr. Peterson’s childhood sweetheart. She supported him through everything, and people all over New York know how kind she is, especially to her mother–in–law. And you? You’re just someone meant to mop floors and serve others.”
Childhood sweethearts?
She helped Hugo through everything?
Other rich girls who were clearly that woman’s friends began speaking up for Emily.
“She’s right! You owe both Mr. and Mrs. Peterson an apology! They’ve been generous enough not to throw you out right away!”
“Exactly! Say sorry and leave!”
Just then, a young man at the table spoke with a mocking tone.
“Ma’am, can’t you tell you’re too old for him? Mr. Peterson should be with someone young and stunning like his wife. You may not be as young and beautiful as she is, but you’re not bad–looking either.”
While speaking, he gave me a slow once–over.
“If you’re that desperate for a man, I guess I could take you in. But with your background, you’d never be anything more than a mistress.”

I calmly wiped the wine from my face, stared at Hugo, and said, “Hugo, we’ve been married for five years. I even turned my back on my family for you. And now you’re just going to stand there while they mock me like this? You’ll regret it!“
