I struggled with a look of delight.
Hugo glared at me disdainfully. “You’re a disgrace. If the chairman saw this mess, it’d be humiliating. Take her to the backyard and lock her up. I’ll handle her after the event.”
“Hugo, you jerk-
I struggled hard, but a maid covered my mouth and dragged me away. I could only watch as my father, Gordon Schultz, entered the hall.
Hugo and Fannie quickly stood to welcome him, and the other guests followed.
Gordon smiled politely and handed them a gift. “I heard you had a baby boy. I came by to offer my congratulations.”
The crowd began to flatter Hugo. “Mr. Peterson is amazing. Sir Schultz often skipped state banquets, but he attended this baptism party.”
Hugo beamed with pride and asked Emily to bring the baby.
Gordon looked at the baby, but his cheerful expression shifted slightly. He exchanged a glance with his son.
My brother, Wyatt Schultz, asked, “Where’s Mrs. Peterson?”
Emily gave a pleasant smile. “That’s me.”
Both Gordon and Wyatt were caught off guard. “Then this child…”

Gordon stepped back in shock, and Wyatt quickly held him. “Dad-”
Before he could finish, I burst in through the back door in a disheveled
state.
Seeing me, Hugo rushed over and threw his jacket over my shoulders.
“Can’t you stop? This is supposed to be a joyful occasion. I told you we’d talk later, but you just had to ruin it. Now you’ve upset Sir Schultz. If he holds it against you, you’re finished. Get out now!”
Then, he smiled and turned to Gordon. “I apologize, Sir Schultz. She’s just a maid. We had a bit of a family issue right before you arrived. I didn’t think she’d be this rude. I’ll punish her later.”
Seeing Gordon there, I felt a sense of relief. I didn’t speak right away and just watched Hugo’s performance.
Maybe I was just too furious. The moment he stopped talking, I slapped him straight across the face.
“You’re lying!”
Fannie rushed toward me like she wanted to hit me, but I kicked her down before she could.
“Ah! You wicked woman! How dare you strike me! Don’t you have any manners? I’ll kill you today!”
I sneered. “I only respected you because you were my husband’s mom. Now that I don’t want him anymore. Why should I care who you are?”
“This is outrageous. Get her out of here!” Emily yelled angrily.
“I’ll make you pay if you hurt her!”

Gordon’s shout startled Emily.
Hugo was about to say something when he saw me holding onto Gordon
and Wyatt’s arms.
“Dad, Wyatt!”
