Chapter 7
Everyone who had just humiliated me was now being dragged away.
Emily, terrified, clutched her child and hid behind Hugo,
Fannie, who wasn’t very well–educated, didn’t understand how serious things had gotten.
“So what if your dad runs the Gordelith Group?” she snapped. “You’ve been in our family for five years and still haven’t had a kid. Our family has passed down through the bloodline for eight generations. You’re just taking up space without giving us a child. What’s wrong with my son and Emily having a baby? She’s my niece! If you hadn’t gotten in the way, she’d be Hugo’s rightful wife! Now that everything is out in the open, get out of our house! Stop ruining our family’s peace!”
I sneered at her words.
Was it my fault that we didn’t have children?
In five years of marriage, Hugo barely touched me. I’d gone to the doctor a long time ago and was told I was completely healthy.
As for the real reason there were no kids, it wasn’t hard to figure out.
“If it weren’t for me, Hugo wouldn’t even dream of becoming vice CEO. He wouldn’t have anything unless luck dropped it in his lap…”
Before I could finish, my chest tightened, and blood poured from my mouth. Everything went black.
When I woke up, I was back home.

My father, mother, brother, and sister–in–law were all gathered around my bed.
As soon as I opened my eyes, my mother pulled me into her arms, sobbing hard.
“My poor girl, you’ve suffered so much. How dare the Peterson family lay a hand on my daughter!”
My father was also furious, but he thought divorcing Hugo was the right
choice.
When I was born, my parents had just started their business. They moved overseas with my brother to raise funds, leaving me with my aunt in the suburbs.
They rarely came back to New York. By the time I turned 16, I had only met them twice.
Then, I met Hugo. He had big dreams, but no one believed in him.
After we got married, I never told him about my background. To me, my parents were practically strangers.
Later, when I saw how frustrated and down Hugo was, and found out my parents were back in New York, I visited them secretly and told them
about him.
Out of guilt, they agreed to help.
That was how he got into the Gordelith Group.
Thanks to the support from my father and brother, Hugo slowly built a name for himself and climbed up the ranks.
Since my parents were always busy, we rarely saw each other and mostly kept in touch by letter.

Hugo had even invited the Gordelith Group today to boost his image.
My father and brother showed up, thinking I had a child, only to stumble upon Hugo’s scheme.
I hadn’t realized until then that this secret was actually my strongest
shield.
If not for that, I would’ve had no way to fight back against Hugo’s betrayal
and lies.
I thought I wouldn’t feel much. After all, this marriage was terrible.
Even though it looked like I’d taken control again, being tricked and hurt by someone I loved for five years left a deep ache in my heart. The pain and frustration just wouldn’t go away.
