Chapter 5
On the screens, the footage showed Ivy’s taunting texts to me:
[So what if you figured out that Rhett and I have something going on? You can only pretend you don’t know! I heard all about how your dad cheated, and because you couldn’t keep your mouth shut, your mom killed herself!]]
[Miserable people like you should’ve died with your mother instead of trying to steal Rhett from me.]]]
Rhett’s phone rang with my special ringtone.[]
He frantically opened his messages: [How do you like my wedding present for you?]]]
Rhett went absolutely ballistic trying to call me back, but the calls wouldn’t go through.[]
Meanwhile, the wedding had turned into complete chaos.[]
People were demanding answers from the Blackwood family, and the Blackwood family could only put all the pressure on Rhett. Rhett just went crazy questioning Ivy:
“You knew Wren was going to leave, didn’t you!“[]
“You drove her away!“]
Ivy was stunned.]
She thought Rhett genuinely loved her.
So, the day she found out I was stepping aside, she didn’t hesitate to agree. She even smirked at me:
“I’m gonna be so much better than you!“]
“With me around, Rhett won’t even remember you exist.“[]
“Just wait! The day I become his bride is the day you eat your words!“[]
But Ivy had no idea.
When Rhett was thirteen, he played hero and pissed off the wrong people. They nearly beat him to death, and I was the one who grabbed a knife and charged into that alley to save him. I fought off all those guys like a maniac, then held him while he bled, crying:[]
“Rhett, you said princes have princesses, and princesses have knights!“]
“Well, I’m your knight! I’m your warrior! I fought off the dragon–now wake up, prince!“]
I stayed outside the ER for two days before they wheeled him out.[]
I waited until he opened his eyes and promised to protect me forever.[]
“Wren, you saved my life. This is gonna sound cheesy as hell, but from now on, my life belongs to you.“]
So how could Rhett possibly forget me and not marry me, like Ivy thought?
How could my position be something that Ivy could easily replace?
I wouldn’t make a scene or throw a tantrum, I’d let Ivy provoke and act recklessly, and I’d voluntarily step aside before the wedding–all of this was to let Rhett know that I was no longer that clinging vine who depended on him to survive. Even if I left Rhett, I could still live perfectly well on my own.[]
“Look, here comes the really explosive stuff!“]
“Thank goodness for this busybody, otherwise we wouldn’t get to see the hot drama unfold.“]
Chapen 3
Summer nudged my arm, snapping me back to reality. I turned my attention back to the livestream on my phone-[]
Rhett was on stage, frantically demanding to know where I was.]
Suddenly, Ivy started laughing.
“Rhett, you’re the one who said you loved me.“]
“You said if it weren’t for Wren, you’d totally marry me! You said you wanted to marry me!“]
I watched Ivy practically having a breakdown, demanding he keep his promise.[]
“You said if Wren ever stepped aside, you’d choose me! You’d be with me!“]
“We even talked about having two kids–a boy who looks like me and a girl who looks like you. Now Wren’s out of the picture, shouldn’t you be happy?“]
Ivy was crying so hard her makeup was running.
But instead of Rhett softening, Mrs. Blackwood slapped her across the face. “You’re the reason Wren and Rhett ended up like this!”
“Rhett!”
Mrs. Blackwood was heartbroken.[]
“How could you do this? How can you face Wren’s mother in heaven?”
“You swore at her funeral! You promised you’d take care of Wren forever! This is how you take care of her?“]
