After that day, Ivy kept trying to get Rhett back, begging him to reconsider.[]
Ivy was convinced that my abrupt departure was why Rhett couldn’t get over me.[]
So when she saw Rhett and me sitting calmly in a coffee shop, she couldn’t take it anymore. She stormed over and pointed at me:[]
“Wren Morrison, what the hell are you doing back here!“[]
Ivy put on the air of already being Rhett’s legal wife.[]
“You and Rhett are over! I’m the one with him now! What gives you the right to come back and seduce him? Who the fuck do you think you are!“[]
I looked at the fury in Ivy’s eyes, watched her transform from confident to completely deranged. I stood up from the couch, raised my hand, and slapped her across the face.
1 stared at her, speaking slowly:[]
“You will never have the right to act like that around me. Remember this,” I moved closer to Ivy, “if I hadn’t chosen to step aside, you’d still be nothing but a dirty side piece!“]]
“A homewrecker that everyone would spit on!“[]
“What gives you the right to talk to me about seduction? You think you’re clean?“[]
Ivy’s face turned red with rage. She raised her hand to hit me back, but Rhett grabbed her wrist. She looked at him in disbelief.[]
“She hit me! Didn’t you see?“[]
“She started it!”
“Didn’t you
see?”
But instead of comforting her, Rhett roughly shoved her away, watching her hit the ground as he said coldly:[]
“Get lost.”
I looked at Rhett and remembered senior year when our school’s queen bee had been aggressively pursuing him. To eliminate the competition, she’d targeted me. She’d had people corner me and drag me to the bathroom to beat me up.
Rhett had done the same thing then–bursting into the girls‘ bathroom like a maniac, grabbing the girl’s arm and warning her:[]
“If Wren Morrison suffers any psychological damage because of you, I swear I’ll destroy you.“[]
That day, Rhett had held me in his arms, racing to the hospital.[]
I’d listened to his strong heartbeat, watched his sharp jawline in the moonlight, seen his furrowed brow tight with worry, and felt nothing but warmth.[]
Curled up in his arms, I’d heard him anxiously ask the doctor:[]
“Doctor, is she okay?“[]
The doctor had looked at my barely–there scratches and laughed: “Kid, you really care about her.“[]
Rhett had blushed, and so had 1.0]
That day, Rhett had told me:[]
“When I heard they’d taken you, I lost it completely! I thought, fuck morality, fuck gender rules–if anyone dares hurt Wren Morrison, forget about a women’s bathroom, I’ll go through hell itself to be your hero.“]
