Chapter 10 Elevator Terror
Adeline stood silently in front of the window, staring into the inky darkness outside.
The wind rustled through the treetops with a low, whispering sound. Her gaze was deep and detached, as if she was looking into nothingness. The image of Michelle’s desperate plea for mercy still lingered in her mind.
“Ms. Layton, it’s bad! The servant’s sudden shout shattered the silence of the room.
Adeline turned to see the frantic servant rushing in, her face etched with panic. “Ms. Michelle… she’s trapped in the elevator!”
The room fell into a deathly quiet, the air seemingly freezing in place. Adeline frowned slightly but quickly regained her composure What does that have to do with me?”
The servant hesitated, unsure of how to respond, and stood there wringing his hands, “But… the elevator is malfunctioning. and the alarm won’t stop ringing. Everyone is worried…”
“Go find Gavin Adeline said calmly. “He truly belongs to the Layton family”
With that, she turned back to the window, her aloof demeanor making the servant too intimidated to say more. He retreated timidly.
However, when the door closed again, Adeline didn’t maintain her indifferent facade. She closed her eyes and took a long breath–three years in prison had taught her how to hide her emotions, but some things could not be completely concealed.
“Ms. Layton, should I go check?” Eden asked cautiously.
“No need, Adeline shook her head. “She won’t be harmed.”
Despite her words, she couldn’t help but recall the fleeting look of resentment and bitterness on Michelle’s face as she left. That woman was never easy to handle.
Suddenly, a piercing alarm sounded from downstairs. The shrill noise, like a blade across the ear, made Adeline frown. Somehow, she felt this incident wasn’t as straightforward as it seemed.
Minutes later, she stepped out of her room.
In the security room at the end of the corridor, people clustered around the monitors, whispering. When Adeline pushed the door open, all eyes turned to her, but no one dared to greet her.
“What’s the situation?” she asked coldly.
A brave servant quickly responded, “Ms. Michelle is stuck between the third and fourth floors. She seems to be having trouble breathing…
The monitor showed Michelle leaning against the corner, her face as pale as paper, gasping for air, appearing on the verge of fainting.
Is it a lack of oxygen? Adeline asked softly.
“Not sure… the servant trembled, the elevator might be too well–sealed…”
“What about the backup power?”
“It’s on, but there seems to be a system issue…”
Hearing this, Adeline narrowed her eyes. She stared at the screen for a few seconds, then turned to Eden. “Get the toolbox”
Eden hesitated. “Ms. Layton, are you going yourself?”

Servants crowded around, all holding their breath, not daring to make a sound. They had never seen this side of Adeline- calm, decisive, and unexpectedly skilled.
“Pass me the screwdriver, she commanded without looking back.
Eden immediately handed her the tool. Watching her skillfully dismantle the elevator panel and inspect the internal wiring with a flashlight, everyone nearly forgot she was oner a pampered noble
“Some tricks learned in prison, she remarked lightly, noticing the stares, which only added to the complex expressions around her.
Some servants couldn’t help but whisper, “Ms. Layton is really something knowing all this stuff…
“Yeah, she seems more reliable than professional technicians…”
Just then, a soft metallic scrape sounded–the elevator door cracked open! Everyone cheered, but Adeline continued working on the wiring until the gap was wide enough for an adult to pass through
Pull Ms. Michelle out she directed, blocking the door with her body to prevent it from closing and causing injury.
Two male servants stepped forward and carried a semi–conscious Michelle out of the elevator. As they placed her on the stretcher, a sharp voice suddenly rang out,
“Wait! Don’t touch her?”
Everyone froze as Taylor burst in furiously, her face contorted with anger. “Do you know why Ms. Michelle got stuck? It’s because someone sabotaged the equipment!”
This accusation dropped like a bomb, stunning everyone. They turned their eyes toward Adeline–the only possible target.
Facing these complex and probing stares, Adeline merely raised an eyebrow, her voice tinged with amusement. “Oh? You mean this accident was orchestrated?”
Taylor gritted her teeth and nodded. “Yes! It was you! You must have wanted revenge on Ms. Michelle, so you tampered with the elevator!”
Murmurs and wary looks spread among the servants. But before they could speak, a crisp and firm voice broke the tension.
“Enough!”
Everyone turned to see Eden, furious, standing up to Taylor. “Ms. Layton served three years for your Ms. Michelle and now faces these accusations? Taylor, do you think you’ve lived too long?”
His words were like thunder, leaving a deep impression on everyone. They exchanged looks, no one daring to speak, knowing all too well the dirt and darkness hidden behind this affair.
Taylor, pale with fright, still tried to defend herself. I… I’m just telling the truth! Who knows if someone’s pretending to be good while doing evil behind the scenes…
“Enough” Gavin’s commanding voice silenced the room as he strode in, his handsome face shadowed with seriousness. He surveyed the crowd, then fixed his gaze on Taylor.
“Taylor, you better be clear about what you’re saying”
This final statement crushed Taylor completely. She bowed her head, no longer daring to speak. Gavin then turned to Adeline, his voice laden with complexity.
