Chapter 17
–
Out of nowhere, my family started caring about me texting me every day, asking how I was, even putting me in the family group chat.
Yes, after being home this long, I still wasn’t in “The Sullivans.”
But I left as soon as they added me.
Chloe called crying, “We’re first–time parents too. We had a lot of constraints…”
I wouldn’t accept it. “You had countless chances to make up for it. There were clearly ways that wouldn’t hurt me or Sophie, but you always gave everything that could’ve been mine to Sophie. Favoritism is favoritism. Why you’re regretting it now–I think it’s not just because your conscience kicked in, right?”
They had no regrets because they knew I was about to squeeze them out of the market. Sure enough, once I completely crushed Samuel, they never reached out again – except when they couldn’t make rent.
I paid back every penny they’d spent on me after acknowledging me as family, then deleted and blocked them.
I heard they eventually moved into the tiny 300–square–foot rental I used to live in.
Gabriel has been asking me to dinner frequently lately, never involving business discussions.
Watching him desperately try to find topics, I knew what he was getting at.
Looking at this business partner who was even more handsome than Preston, I wiped my mouth. “If you’re not discussing projects, I’m leaving.”
“Wait.” He coughed, his cheeks flushing. “Do we have to talk about projects all the time? Can’t we talk about other things? Can’t we discuss something else?”
I looked at him and smiled. “Sure.”
