Chapter 7
A few days later, Vincent had his assistant carefully prepare a candlelit dinner and added several birthday gifts.
The jewelry and handbags were all the latest and most popular limited editions, with prices that were jaw–dropping
Abbie sat at the table, looking at the romantic meal spread with flowers, feeling a bit puzzled.
She didn’t know what he wanted to do, so she simply asked him directly.
“Did you have a conflict with Liana recently?”
I only had time to do these for her.
Vincent stopped cutting the steak for her and furrowed his brow, “What does it have to do with Liana? You are my wife, shouldn’t I be the one preparing a birthday surprise for you?”
Wife? Ridiculous.
Abbie smiled, “Wife? A wife who hasn’t shared a bed for three years?”
Vincent paused for a moment and remained silent for a few seconds before saying, “There was a reason for the previous differences in the rooms.”
Any reason?
She understood that he had to remain faithful to Liana.
She didn’t speak, but seeing her silence, he spoke again, his tone softened a bit.
“Next, I fulfilled my marital duties, but had to wait until one month later.”
One month later?
By that time, she had even given birth to the child, divorced him, and was ready to embrace her brand new life. What marital obligations did she still need
him to fulfill?
She just didn’t understand why he, who had been persistent for three years, suddenly let go.
Did Ricardo and Mila give birth again? Did he say these words to protect Liana, so that Ricardo and Mila wouldn’t target her?
Just as he was about to ask, Vincent suddenly received a phone call.
After hanging up the phone, he hesitantly looked at Abbie, hesitating whether to speak or not.
“You go ahead if you have something.” She decisively broke the deadlock and generously said.
“Next year, I will give you an even grander birthday celebration.”
He looked at her with a full apology in his eyes, placing a plate of sliced steak in front of her, his tone unusually gentle.
Watching Vincent’s departing figure, Abbie had no appetite at all.
Next year? By this time next year, they won’t be together anymore.
She had the servant tidy up the untouched candlelit dinner on the table and then returned to her room,
The days passed by, and Abbie’s belly grew bigger and bigger.
It was time for another prenatal check–up in the blink of an eye.
Abbie was holding a stack of examination reports as she had just come out of the gynecology department when she ran into her former university
mentor.
“Teacher?”
The mentor saw her eyes full of surprise, but looked up at the obstetrics and gynecology department behind her, and her face was filled with astonishment. “Abbie, are you pregnant?”
Abbie nodded.
“Where is your husband? Why didn’t he come to accompany you?”
She didn’t answer again. Seeing her like this, the mentor couldn’t help but sigh deeply.

Which woman hasn’t been wasted by marriage? Back then, you were the most talented and highest–achieving in our department. The only opportunity to pursue a PhD was yours, but unfortunately, your parents made you go back for an arranged marriage. If you had continued to delve deeper, you would have definitely become my most remarkable student.
The mentor looked at Abbie with regret and shook his head helplessly.
And Abbie couldn’t help but tighten her grip on the inspection report in her hand.
She gave a bitter smile and said, “My parents raised me for many years, I had no choice. They forced me into a marriage to save the family business, and I must repay this favor.”
She paused, and her smile became a little more relieved. “But now my debt of gratitude is paid off. I am ready to divorce and go abroad, to rediscover beloved career and find my true self again.”
