Chapter 8
Before I could finish speaking, he suddenly grabbed my chin and snapped sharply,
“Don’t you fucking dare bring up your mother.”
“Don’t try to dump all the blame on her. You and your mom are exactly the same money–hungry and take. One’s no better than the other.”
Booking of alcohol, he leaned in and threatened,
“Cora, when I said I was going to seal the mate hond with you, it’s not up for discussion. You better be grateful and say yes.”
He said he didn’t want to hear my explanation.
He said that since I once hurt him deeply, now it was only fair that he made me hurt even more.
I stared at his face and suddenly, he felt like a stranger.
Maybe all the kindness my mother and 1 had shown him back then really had meant nothing Just a one–sided illusion.
Maybe I should’ve held onto him tighter that year, and dragged him down with me, making his already poor life even worse.
The old me had been so foolish, foolish enough that even I pitied myself.
Then he continued.
“I heard Lucy used to work at a club. The land that serves drinks to men, yeah?”
“She’s pretty lucky, though. She still managed to land herself a decent mate,
*Tell me, if that guy ever found out Lucy used to be a hostess, would he still want her?”
I was shaking with rage. I raised my hand and slapped him hard across the face.
“You bastard!”
With a smirk, he pressed his tongue to hall his cheek. Then he gripped my chin again and said coldly, “Cora, I can do far worse than this to get back at you.
“If you don’t believe me, you can try and see.”
Asher was ruthless. I didn’t dare test him. I couldn’t risk ruining the good life Lucy had finally found.
I had no family left anyway, but only Lucy. If I lost her too, there’d be no reason for me to keep living
So fine. I’d seal the mate bond with him.
His revenge dragged on for a long time.
It was so long, that by the time Asher finally got tired of playing and wanted to reconcile but I had already stopped loving him.
Lucy came to see me again, this time with good news. She and her mate were about to seal the mate bond officially.
She invited me to be her bridesmaid on the day of her mating ceremony, to witness her happiness.
So she ordered me to recover and to attend her mating ceremony with the healthy and beautiful status.
I knew there was no getting better.
But I didn’t want her to worry, so I suilled and nodded.
“Okey.”
I pushed myself harder to recover. I swallowed handfuls of pills, endured injection after injection until my arms were bruised all over–and never once complained about the pain
But no matter how strong the medication or how advanced the treatment, none of it could stop the flow of lite slipping away.
My hair began to fall out in clumps. I slept in
more and more. The time I spent awake grew shorter and shorter.
I thought it was time to say goodbye to Lucy properly.
Maybe it was a final burst of energy before the end, but in those last few days, even though my body ached more and more, my mind felt clearer and sharper.

And maybe bearing of my “recovery,” made Amy nervous,
One day, while Asher was away, she came to the Pack hospital.
Lucy saw her and immediately snapped,
“You little bitch, you’ve got the nerve to show your face around Cora? Get lost before I really show you what I’m capable of.”
That Amy was acting strangely that day. She suddenly dropped to her knees by my bod, crying as she begged,
Hut
“Luna, I’m pregnant. I’m carrying Alpha’s pup. You’re dying anyway, please, just be decent and give Asher back to me.”
She was three months pregnant, the same three months I’d been sick.
So while Asher told me he needed me, he’d been in bed with another woman.
It made sense. What would he want with a dying woman?
He’d just been lying to me all along.
Luckily, I didn’t believe him.
Amy reached for my arm as she cried I was too weak to resist and almost fell out of bed.
Lucy jumped in to protect me and ended up getting several scratches from Amy’s desperate grasp.
Suddenly, someone yanked Amy back by the hair and flung her aside.
It was Asher
His Alpha aura surged around him–dangerous, primal–so intense he looked like he was seconds away from shifting. He looked like he wished he could kill her. His voice was a furious snarl as he roared,
“Who gave you permission to bother her? Didn’t I warn you about this?”
Any’s expression changed. She opened her mouth to speak, but before she could, Lacy grabbed the flower vase from the bedside table and smashed it right at them.
Screaming in fury, she shouted,
“Get out of here with this bitch!”
