Chapter 21
Xander Jin stood at the doorway.
His suit was disheveled, eyes bloodshot, looking utterly exhausted.
Caitlin’s expression darkened instantly. Without hesitation, she tried slamming the door shut–only for Xander to wedge his hand in the gap.
“Hissss!”
A red welt bloomed across his forearm. He sucked in a sharp breath, clenching his jaw against the pain.
Caitlin showed no sympathy. “Let go!”
“Honey…” Xander’s voice was hoarse, thick with suppressed emotion. He played dumb: “Why didn’t you tell me you were visiting Mom and Dad? I‘ ve been worried sick looking for you.”
Caitlin answered with a cold laugh.
Her eyes brimmed with sarcasm: “Xander, I assume you’ve received the divorce certificate I mailed? Have some self–respect and quit calling me that–I’m not your wife anymore.”
“And spare me the ‘I was worried‘ nonsense. Shouldn’t you be entertaining Eleanor’s family? How’d you find time to track me down? Or did you forget she might get jealous?”
Xander’s breath caught, pain flooding his eyes as regret etched across his face.

So she knew everything.
Her distant use of “Xander” wrenched his heart like a vise.
“N–no, it’s not what you think.”
Pale and flustered, he fumbled for words.

If he didn’t explain now, he’d lose her forever–panic choked his throat, guilt tangling his tongue into incoherence.
Caitlin was utterly calm, even impatient.
She had no time to waste standing foolishly at the door with him. Just as she was about to tell him to leave again, Marvin and Wendy came out upon hearing the noise, and Xander’s eyes instantly lit up.
“Dad! Mom!”
He seemed to see hope.
But Marvin bellowed angrily: “I’m not your dad!”
Wendy, who had always adored this son–in–law, also turned cold–faced and snapped: “My daughter has nothing to do with you now. Don’t call me Mom.”
“We didn’t go to Washington D.C. to settle scores, yet you dare show up here! Think the Schmidts are pushovers? Think I won’t teach you a
lesson?!”
Marvin grew angrier the more he thought about it.
He immediately grabbed a nearby broom, shielded Caitlin behind him, and jabbed at Xander: “Get lost! Don’t dirty our doorstep!”

He even started whacking him while shouting.
Xander dodged in a panic, ending up like discarded trash being heartlessly shoved downstairs.
Caitlin stood behind her parents, tears welling in her eyes.

How wonderful–this feeling of being protected. Only her parents would love her unconditionally.
After driving Xander away, they tacitly resumed dinner. Mom and Dad didn’t ask what happened, and she didn’t want to reopen those wounds.
The family of three finished their meal, then shared fruit while watching TV, discussing the show’s plot as if nothing had occurred.
Nestled in her mother’s arms, nibbling fruit her father offered, Caitlin felt this warmth quietly healing her scars.
After a while, she retreated to her room.
She had just secured Javier’s investment and had plenty of work ahead. Tomorrow, she’d lead a company tour while reviewing upcoming plans.
Now she couldn’t afford any slack, energized like she’d been injected with adrenaline, determined to prove herself quickly.
Xander hadn’t left yet either.
He stood downstairs, the muffled laughter drifting through the windows piercing his heart like shards.
Back when he accompanied Caitlin to her parents‘ home, Marvin and Wendy would always be waiting outside before the car even stopped, beaming to welcome him.

Even heaven seemed to protest–a dull thunderclap cracked the night sky before torrential rain drenched him completely.
Xander didn’t seek shelter from the rain either, but stood drenched for hours, too afraid to approach yet unable to tear himself away.
He stared greedily at Caitlin’s window, determined to keep vigil until her light vanished.
Unexpectedly, she appeared moments later to shut the window. Caitlin paused briefly before decisively closing it.
She couldn’t even spare him a glance.
Xander felt his heart being carved out as he stood in the downpour, agony flooding his eyes, the storm inside him refusing to subside…
