“She asked me to talk to Arthur,” Marcus said, his tone low.
“Arthur told me to get rid of the baby.”
“I made her a deal: terminate the pregnancy, get the letter, and take some money to stay gone
forever.”
“She agreed on the spot.”
“We did it at a hospital our company invested in. I oversaw the whole thing.”
“After the procedure, I had the fetus DNA–tested.”
He took another shot and laughed bitterly.
“Sure enough… not Arthur’s.”
“In the end, Vivian was sentenced to death with reprieve.”
“That one’s on me. I made sure it stuck.”
“She should’ve gotten a lighter sentence, but I tacked on armed assault and attempted murder.”
“Her accomplices got life.”
He poured me a drink.
“No reaction?”
I shook my head. “I’ve really let it go.”
That night, Marcus got drunk.
The next morning, I woke to a text:

I replied:
[If you’re ever in town again, dinner’s on me.]
