Arthur’s composure shattered. “No. No, that can’t be right. Vivian promised me–at most it would be a miscarriage-”
“You really think Vivian Chase could stay calm in a situation like that?” Marcus growled.
“You think she’d stop at just a miscarriage?” Marcus grabbed Arthur by the collar, seething with fury. “What the hell were you thinking?! Are you brain–dead or what?!”
Arthur quickly covered Marcus’s mouth and motioned toward me.
“Don’t wake her up,” he hissed, voice low.
Then, his tone softened into something almost mournful. “Marcus… help me out.”
“Find every doctor who performed the surgery. Get them out of the country. She can’t find out
about this.”

Marcus stared at him for a long time. Then sighed. “You can’t hide this forever. What’s your plan
when she finds out?”
Arthur’s voice cracked. “I don’t know. This has all gone so far off course I’ll… I’ll find a way to give her a child. Even if it means going abroad. Even if it means breaking the law.

Marcus was silent for a long time. Then he placed a hand on Arthur’s shoulder. “You brought this
on yourself.”
He turned and walked out, leaving Arthur behind.
Arthur took a long breath and came over to my bedside.
He gently took my hand in his, and slowly rubbed the back of it against his cheek.

The scratch of his stubble prickled faintly against my skin–tickling me in a way that once made me
laugh.
But now, it only reminded me of how far we’d fallen.
