“Maybe I gave you the wrong impression,” he said softly.
“Maybe you think I’m on her side.”
“I’ll call them here now, okay?”
To my horror–he actually picked up the phone and made the call.
A few minutes later, she–Vivian Chase walked into my house.
I gritted my teeth, hatred flaring as her face came into view.
All I could see was the moment she held that rusted metal rod and ordered her friends to pin me
down.
“Elaine…”
She dropped to her knees with a loud thud.
Tears poured down her face.

“I mistook you for someone else. I didn’t mean to hurt you like that.”
“Please… forgive me…”
She banged her head against the floor until it bled, staining the hardwood with crimson flowers.
“See?” Arthur said softly. “She’s already like this. Just sign it.”
“If not, people will say you’re being unreasonable.”
So pitiful. So tragic.
But the earrings she wore were ones I picked–for a gift Arthur claimed was for Marcus’s
girlfriend.
Her ring matched Arthur’s.
The hickey on her neck was still fresh.
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes.
Arthur, do you know how long it took me to convince myself?
