The day after Addison O’Neal accused Evelyn Gregson of hitting her with a car, Evelyn’s husband and their two sons hung Evelyn’s younger brother over a giant pot of boiling oil and threatened to kill him.
Evelyn lunged forward in a frenzy, only to be stopped forcefully by the bodyguards.
Do you even realize what you’ve done?” Reuben Gregson stood aside in his tailored suit, his gaze sharp, voice cold and detached, “Would you dare hurt Addy again?”
“I didn’t hit her!” Evelyn cried.“Reuben, let my brother go! He’s only eighteen. He just got into Harvard!”
Wes Gregson, their five–year–old son, folded his arms and said indifferently, “The evidence is right there. Why are you still trying to deny it?”
Nolan Gregson, their four–year–old son, nodded as well.
His voice was sweet, but there was a trace of cruelty in it.
“Mom, if you didn’t want Uncle Eddie to get hurt, you should’ve thought twice before hitting Addy. She’s our favorite.”
Evelyn’s heart lurched.
If Addison was their favorite, what about her?
What was she to them?
She looked at Reuben, hoping he would spare Eddie Perrow for the sake of the years they spent as a married couple.
But Reuben stared back coldly, as if she were a stranger.
Suddenly, Evelyn let out a laugh as tears rolled down her cheeks.
It turned out that after all these years, Reuben only loved Addison.
Memories pierced Evelyn’s heart like a knife.
Evelyn, Reuben, and Addison were childhood friends and grew up together.
Evelyn had a crush on Reuben, but Reuben was head over heels with Addison.
So, Evelyn kept her feelings to herself and even helped Reuben plan his confession.
But the day before Reuben’s confession, the plane Addison boarded crashed, and no remains were ever found.
After that, Reuben drowned himself in alcohol every day, becoming a complete mess.
Evelyn stayed by his side and looked after him.
When he was drunk as a skunk, she made him soup to help with his hangover.
And when his stomach bled, she watched over him all night.
One night, Reuben was wasted.
He grabbed Evelyn’s wrist, mumbled Addison’s name, and pinned her under him.
Evelyn could have pushed him away.
Yet her love for him was so deep, and she was willing to be Addison’s substitute,
The next day when Reuben woke up, he peered at the bloodstains on the sheet and fell silent for a long time.
In the end, he said, “I’ll be responsible for you. Let’s get married.”
So they tied the knot.
After they got married, she tried her best to treat him well.
Since he had stomach issues, she got up early each day to prepare milk for him.
When he was swamped with work, she taught herself to help with his paperwork.
When he had nightmares, she sat with him until sunrise.
Gradually, Reuben stopped looking at her the same way.
It seemed he started falling for her as well.

He would remember her favorite flavors, make her brown sugar water during her period, and gently kiss her forehead while she was asleep.
Soon, they had Wes and Nolan.
The two kids never left her side, and Reuben often pulled her into his arms, smiling as he whispered, “Honey, I’m grateful for everything.”
Those five years were the happiest time of her life.
Until Addison suddenly “came back to life” and stood before him again.
Evelyn saw a spark in Reuben’s eyes.
Adding to her desperation, Wes and Nolan, her two sons, quickly sided with Addison.
“Addy is way nicer than our mom!
“Addy will play games with us, but our mom just bosses us around!
“Dad, can we let Addy be my mom?”
Every time, Reuben just calmly glanced at her, patted his son’s head, and said, “Don’t talk nonsense.”
But he never argued back.
Evelyn felt like an
outsider, watching the five years of happiness she had stolen fall apart the moment Addison came back.
And now, they were even using such cruel ways to make her admit to something she wasn’t guilty of.
“I didn’t hit her!” Evelyn snapped, her voice shaking. “Reuben, let him go!”
Reuben’s gaze turned cold.
“Since you’re so stubborn, then taste the pain of losing the one you love.”
As he raised his hand, the bodyguard immediately cut the rope!
“No!”
Evelyn watched the rope break, and her brother plunged into the boiling oil below.
She dashed forward to save Eddie, but the bodyguards held her down tightly.
She could only scream in despair,“Reuben! You killed him! You killed him!”
She was in so much pain, like her heart was being torn apart.
Suddenly, she coughed up blood.
Wes looked at her and curled his lip impatiently.
That’s not uncle up there. It’s fake, mom. Why are you getting so
worked up?”
Nolan snorted, “Yeah. We just wanted to scare you. Who said you

Casting a condescending glance, Reuben said, “Remember this feeling. Addy is back alive, and I won’t lose her again.”
He paused, his tone softening.

away.”
Evelyn looked up, trembling.
But she was already preparing for a divorce.
She didn’t want a husband and sons who clearly took Addison’s side.
Just as she was about to speak, Reuben’s phone rang.
“Addy?” he answered the phone softly, “Is it hurting again? I’ll be there soon.”
He hung up.
Without looking at Evelyn, he left with Wes and Nolan.

The factory emptied instantly, leaving only Evelyn kneeling on the ground, her tears
As she wiped her tears and tried to get up, her phone buzzed.
A message from Addison popped up on the screen.
“Evelyn, I switched that dummy. Your real brother is in that pot now.”
Reading it made Evelyn’s blood run cold.
She staggered toward the pot, and the scorching steam rose, stinging her
In the pot, Eddie’s body had been fried beyond recognition.
His skin charred, limbs warped and deformed.
Only his eyes remained wide open, staring directly at her.
“Eddie! Eddie!” Evelyn yelled.
She hastily reached for him.

She was shaking from the pain, but still tried to grab Eddie’s hand.

Evelyn dropped to her knees, pleading for help, but everyone steered clear of her.
By the time she found a doctor, Eddie was not breathing anymore.

She held Eddie’s charred body and broke down in tears, realizing he would never answer
her again.
He died.
He was killed by the person she loved most.
Three days later, a funeral was held at the cemetery.

Evelyn stood in front of her brother’s grave, her face drained of any color.
She felt numb for the last three days as she handled the death certificate, sent her brother to be cremated, and buried him herself.
But Reuben and their two sons never showed up once.
On Addison’s Instagram, Evelyn saw the latest post.
It was a photo of Reuben feeding Addison, captioned:“Someone insisted on taking care of me himself. I honestly can’t stop him!”
Meanwhile, Wes and Nolan commented on it.
“Addy, get well soon! We’re dying to go to the amusement park with you!”
“Addy! You’re way nicer than our mom. You’re our favorite!”
Evelyn turned off her phone, her eyes glinting with disappointment.
She left the cemetery and did two things.
First, she went to the law firm and drafted a divorce agreement.
Then she went to the police station to file a report. Then
“Sir, I want to report Addison for attempted murder.”
