Evelyn returned from the police station and started packing her stuff.
Suddenly, the door was kicked open:
Reuben stood there with a face like thunder.
Wes and Nolan tagged behind, glaring at her as if she had done something truly unforgivable.
Did you go to the police and press charges against Addy?” Reuben said coldly, “Who exactly did she kill? Are you done with your nonsense?
Before Evelyn could explain, Wes dashed over and shoved her.
“You’re a terrible mother! Would you only be happy if Addy died?
Nolan rushed over, roo, hitting her leg with his little fist.
“You’re so mean! Addy is so nice. Why did you frame her?”
Evelyn staggered back, crashing into the wardrobe.
She winced and drew w in a sharp breath from the pain.
She stared at them through teary eyes, her voice shaking.
“Addison switched the dummy and got Eddie killed. I called the police to arrest her. Was I wrong?”
Reuben and their two sons were all stunned
Reuben sneered, “Nonsense! Addy would never do something like that!”
Evelyn laughed as tears poured out of her eyes.
“Call Eddie now. See if he’ll pick up
Reuben frowned and took out his phone to call Eddie.
The phone kept beeping
After a long hold, the call automatically disconnected.
It remained unanswered
Reuben’s expression changed slightly.
Just as he was about to speak, the doar creaked open
Addison walked in and leaned against the doorframe, her face ghostly pale.
I heard Eddie went on a graduation trip. Maybe the signal was bad and he missed the call.”
Wes and Nolan bolted to Addison’s side, supporting her quickly.
“Addy! You weren’t supposed to leave the hospital! The doctor said you needed to rest!”
Addison gave a faint smile.
I heard Evelyn reported me for murder. How could I not come and explain?”
Shar
looked at Evelyn with gerale yet wo
wounded
“Evelyn, I get it. You’re scared. Reuben and I used to have feelings for each other, but that chapter is closed. You’re married now, so I only wish both of you well. I would never ruin your family. But accusing me of murder? That’s a serious charge.”
Wes immediately looked up, face glowing with admiration.
“Addy is seeing the big picture! But mom is narrow–minded. They’re on a whole different level!”
Nolan poured
“Wes is right. Mom only lies and hurts prople!”
Evelyn trembled, digging her nails into her palms.
“After the police are done investigating, you’ll know who’s right and who’s wrong.”
“Investigation?” Reuben sneered, “You framed Addy, and that’s the truth! What’s left to investigate!”
He glanced down at her and said decisively, Tve already withdrawn the case and warned them. No one in Boston has the guts to take your case.”
Evelyn’s eyes widened in disbelief.
When she tried to speak, her phone rang.
It was a call from the police station.
“Mrs. Gregson, we dropped that case. Mr. Gregson made it very clear. So, there’s nothing we can do, and no one in Boston is willing to take it. I’m sorry.”
The call ended, and Evelyn stood there, a chill running through her body.
Pain, despair, and anger gnawed at her heart.
It felt like a piece of her heart had been ripped out, and the excruciating pain clouded her sight.
But in the end, she started laughing.
Looking at her beloved husband and sons, she laughed so hard that tears gushed out.
Reuben didn’t know why, but his heart suddenly clenched.
He said slowly and softly, “Alright, let’s leave it there. I went a bit too far this time and scared you. I apologize.”
He paused.
“Name anything you want. Ill make it up to you.”
Evelyn’s tears kept falling down, and her eyes grew colder with each passing moment.
She wiped away her tears and trudged to the drawer.
Every step was a quiet goodbye to her old self.
When she brought out the divorce papers, her hands quivered, not from anger or grief, but from a calm that was almost a relief.
