Chapter2
My house never had guests.
They all despised me, insulted me, whispered that I was a shameless woman who had gotten pregnant out of wedlock just to climb into the Alpha’s bed.
Not one of them knew I was his true mate.
Now, someone was pounding on my door, each knock louder than the last.
I opened it to find a servant staring at me with open disdain.
“The matriarch wants the boy brought to the pack hall.”
My husband’s grandmother had never hidden her contempt for me or my son. She had never looked at us kindly, not once.
So why was she summoning us now?
By the time I entered the pack hall, every member of the pack was already in place.
At the center stood Corvin, who hadn’t come home last night, supporting Lilith with one arm, his gaze so tender it could drip honey.
Lilith stood close to him, cheeks flushed, eyes lowered, her hand resting naturally on his arm.
Her belly had already begun to swell.
The matriarch spoke first, unable to hide her excitement. “Lilith is with pup. The Moon Goddess blesses us, our bloodline will continue,
and our future is bright.”
She swept her gaze across the hall. “Today, with all our kin gathered, it is time to fulfill our promise.”
Draven, one of the elders, rose to his feet, his voice deep and steady. “From this day forward, Corvin will take the Alpha’s seat.”
“He is the youngest heir in our history, and the first to sire an heir before ascending the throne. That is cause for celebration.”
I lowered my head and took my son Fenrir’s hand, standing with him at the edge of the crowd.
No one spoke our names.
Corvin raised a hand, stroking Lilith’s stomach with a look so gentle he seemed like another man entirely. “I’m going to be a father.”
I knew it wasn’t his first time.
But it was the first time he had said those words aloud, like some proud declaration.
My fingers trembled. I swallowed down the bitterness and looked at Fenrir.
Suddenly, he whispered, “Mom, you’re hurting me.”
Only then did I notice my grip tightened until his small bones pressed against my palm, a sharp reminder I was still holding on hard, too desperately.
“Sorry, sweetheart.” I bent to comfort him, softening my touch.
But his voice had already drawn attention.
too
Another elder, a bit younger one, muttered, “That’s her kid? She actually brought him here?”
Another sneered, “An unmarked, unmated, unregistered bastard. Bold of her to show him off.”
“Don’t say that’s Corvin’s pup, his wolf is unstable. Keeping him here is a burden to the pack.”
Grandmother didn’t stop them. She simply said, lightly, “Tell outsiders he’s from a branch family. A foster pup here.
Her words silenced the hall for a few seconds, then came a chorus of agreement.

Corvin’s brow furrowed, as if he meant to speak. “Mother, this, ‘
“”
He stepped forward, but Lilith tugged him back, her voice barely a whisper. “You’re Alpha now. Don’t let them think you can’t let go.”
I saw it all.
Taking Fenrir’s hand, I stepped forward, my voice flat. “As you wish. From this moment, he no longer bears the Hale name.”
I crouched to my son’s level and murmured, “Baby, from now on you only call him Alpha Corvin. Dad or anything like that would not be allowed, okay?”
Corvin froze, staring at me, a flicker of regret in his eyes.
But in the end, he said nothing.
Fenrir’s little face crumpled, tears streaking down his cheeks. I held him close, ready to leave.
Then Lilith’s voice rang out. “Selena, I heard that wearing a gold moonstone during pregnancy helps stabilize the baby. Corvin searched everywhere and couldn’t find one, but I remember, you have one.”
She lifted her hand, pointing to the gold moonstone pendant at my throat.
“Would you be willing to give it to me?”
My eyes dropped to the pale skin above her collarbone, the love bites there had yet to fade.
That stone was the spirit gem Corvin and I had chosen together after Fenrir’s birth. He had woven the cord himself, promising it would protect us for life.
She had asked him for it many times. He had never given it to her.
Now, every eye in the hall was on me, pressing, waiting. They had already chosen their Luna.
I looked at Corvin.
This time, he lowered his head, said nothing, and turned away.
“You should,”
I smiled faintly, slipped the moonstone from my neck, and tossed it into her waiting palm.
“Here. Take it.”
She beamed, fastening it around her neck before turning to Corvin with a playful lilt, “See? Isn’t it pretty?”
I didn’t look back. Holding my son, I strode from the hall.
Behind me, the matriarch’s warm voice rang out, “Prepare the wedding. May the Moon Goddess bless Lilith’s pup to be the brightest pure–blood Alpha.”
