Chapter3
Back at our small home on the edge of the pack’s territory, Fenrir wouldn’t stop crying.
I held him close and whispered, “Fenrir, if Mom takes you away from here, would you come with me?”
He sniffled, lifting his head just enough to murmur, “Are we really leaving?”
I nodded. “We don’t belong here.‘
“But… your dad and grandma don’t like us. Do you really want to call him ‘Alpha‘ for the rest of your life?”
“Would you be okay watching another kid call him ‘Dad‘… when you can’t?”
“Fenrir, that’s going to hurt. And we could live a different kind of life.”
He didn’t answer, just hugged his wooden wolf doll tighter, the one Corvin had given him three years ago.
Then, softly, “Mom… can we have one more birthday with Dad?”
I closed my eyes and pulled him tighter into my arms.
“Alright.”
Two days later was Fenrir’s birthday.
I sent an old servant wolf ahead with a message for Corvin, hoping he would come.
It would be the last day father and son spent together in this land.
That morning, Fenrir put on his only black suit. Over and over, he asked, “Mom, Dad’s coming today, right?”
“He will,” I said gently, while quietly sending another servant to deliver a second reminder.
But all morning, we waited, and the messenger returned empty–handed.
Fenrir lowered his head, fingers brushing the red ribbon tied around the cake box. His voice was barely a whisper.
“Dad’s not coming, is he?”
After a moment, he forced a smile. “It’s okay. Alpha’s probably too busy. We won’t bother him.”
It was the first time he called Corvin “Alpha.”
I knew it wasn’t acceptance, it was him learning the rules.
I fought to keep my rage in check, clutching the unanswered message in my hand, ready to toss it into the fire and watch it burn. Just then, a low–ranking servant burst in from beside the fire pit, a scroll in hand, speaking so fast the words tumbled out, “Message from the pack hall, Alpha summons you and the boy to take your seats.”
My heart lurched.
I unrolled the summons, my fingers trembling.
I handed it to Fenrir. “Look, Dad remembered.”
His face lit up instantly, eyes sparkling like stars. “He must’ve gotten me a present! Mom, let’s go!”
On the way there, he chattered with excitement. “Do you think it’s a big battle–wolf doll? Or a flame–wolf that can transform?”
But when we reached the outskirts of the hall and I saw the sea of blooming Red Moon Roses, my steps froze.
The decorations were too extravagant, too romantic.

This wasn’t set for a pup’s celebration.
Fenrir didn’t notice, but he pulled me along inside.
I followed, but each step grew heavier.
Corvin… please, just don’t push him away. Not today.
The pack hall was ablaze with light. The elders, bloodline kin, and Alphas from every branch pack were gathered.
Standing in front of the cake were Thorne and Lilith.
When Fenrir saw his father, his face lit up. He ran forward, throwing his arms around him. “Dad!”
The hall went dead silent.
Corvin froze, then slowly looked down at the boy.
“What are you doing here?”
The hesitation in his voice was like a cold knife sliding into my chest.
Whispers rippled around us.
“Isn’t today the wedding?”
“A kid? Where did he come from?”
“I heard he’s never marked anyone.”
“Some bastard he picked up while fooling around?”
When Corvin pushed Fenrir back, his expression shifted sharply.
“What did you just call me?”

Fenrir stumbled two steps, landing on the floor. His gaze swept the room, anum that moment, he understood.
His eyes turned red, but his voice stayed quiet. “Alpha Corvin.”
Slowly, he got to his feet, staring at the cake in the center. He managed a small smile.
“Alpha, why don’t you celebrate with me too? We can cut the cake together.”
Watching him stand so straight, forcing that smile, felt like my heart was being scraped raw with a blade.
Corvin said nothing.
Lilith had already stepped up to the microphone, lifting her glass.
“Thank you all for coming to celebrate my wedding to Alpha Corvin.”
That was when Fenrir truly understood.
Today was Fenrir’s birthday..
But they had chosen this day to announce their new “alliance.”
