Chapter 6
Lily’s face was covered in blood from her nose. She curled up on the floor.
But she still tried to play the victim in front of Henry, moaning: “Gabriella… I really know I was wrong…”
I sneered and kicked her in the ribs.
The clear sound of cracking bone accompanied Lily’s scream echoing through the room.
She couldn’t hold back anymore and angrily cursed: “This woman is crazy! Henry, save me!”
Henry lunged at me. I dodged to the side, turned around, and slapped him hard.
My grandfather served as a senior officer in the White House Military Office.
As the heir to one of Washington’s most influential political families, during my upbringing, I not only received rigorous combat training but also participated in specialized courses in advanced strategy and crisis response.
Those years of effort hadn’t been wasted.
Blood seeped from the corner of Henry’s mouth, his cheek red and swollen.
“Gabriella! If you touch her again, I’ll have my father deal with you!”
Henry threatened loudly, trembling as he pulled out his phone.
I stared at him, memories of our first meeting flashing through my mind.
It was by the lake on our university campus.
Henry wore a simple white T-shirt and jeans, carrying a stack of books, hurrying toward the library.
I happened to be returning from dance practice, and as we passed each other, his books scattered to the ground with a crash.
“Sorry!”
He crouched down to pick them up. When he looked up, the wind had messed up his hair.
The lamplight reflected in his eyes like scattered stars.
I was stunned for a moment, then crouched down to help him collect the books, my fingertips accidentally touching the back of his hand.
He froze, then smiled.
“You’re Gabriella, the most popular girl in the business school, right? My roommate can’t stop talking about you.”
“What about you?” I asked.
Henry blinked, his smile deepening.
“Me? Not yet.”
“Who knows what might happen next.”
After that chance encounter, we stayed in touch more and more.
He became the only person I would stay up late to help study.
Also the only one who would hand me water and wipe my sweat in front of everyone after dance practice.
Henry would always say proudly. “She’s my girlfriend, and I’ll spoil her however I want!”
That’s how we fell in love.
It was passionate, bold, and everything felt perfect.
After graduation, I decided to stay in New York and work at Henry’s family company, Grant Corporation.
Initially, Henry’s parents didn’t approve of me.
But after I topped the sales charts for two consecutive years and helped the company’s revenue soar, they began to change their attitude.
On our wedding day, Henry held me tightly, laughing through tears.
I gently kissed away his tears.
We both thought we would love each other for life, staying together until old age.
But after Lily joined the company and became Henry’s assistant, things began to change.
The two were constantly together, spending more and more time with each other.
At first, I didn’t think much of it.
Until Henry started traveling frequently for business, often not coming home for entire nights, and rumors about them spread through the office, I became alert.
I wanted to talk to Henry about it, but every time I brought up Lily, he would become impatient.
“Lily is my assistant. What’s wrong with us being together often?”
“We’ve loved each other for so many years. I’ve given you everything. Don’t married couples even have basic trust?”
“Gabriella, you’re so disappointing!”
The Henry of before thought about me every moment.
Now, his eyes held only disgust and anger toward me.
The more I thought about it, the colder my heart became. I ignored Henry’s threats, stepped on Lily’s wrist, and twisted hard.
A crisp crack.
She screamed, her eyes bulging, letting out an agonizing wail.
Henry dialed the phone, shouting for his parents to bring people over.
His voice no longer held arrogance-only panicked desperation.
In less than twenty minutes, urgent footsteps sounded outside the door.
Henry’s father-Ethan-burst in, followed by a group of family relatives, all carrying golf clubs.
“Gabriella! Let go of my son!”
